There already is a topic describing the Digistar, but the model I saw mentioned was a DIGISTAR 811Us model - this apparently plays divx/xvid files. Can anyone pse confirm that the models that are being sold on Trademe as this model without the 's' suffix eg 811U are the same beast and play DIVX?
Any other comments about the model are appreciated.
Al.

If anyone else has one of these sets please confirm the following:
Manual record eg press record at any time sometimes locks up. The only way to stop is to unplug STB from mains!
Timed record when completed does not revert STB to standby, which its meant to do. EG a recording done overnight leaves the STB running until you manually switch it to standby.
When you use EPG for program, you cannot modify the REPEAT function eg repeat daily, and TIMER CONTROL. The only way you can change REPEAT AND TIMER CONTROL is by turning RECORDER OFF, then as you change the others you lose EPG program settings eg Channel and Time!
Elsewhere someone mentions timed recordings are unreliable. This can be caused by not making the last setting RECORDER ON, but also is caused by unreliable firmware or hardware.
Switching on sometimes does not start the receiver - needs to be unplugged from mains.
Set Info (off the menu): SW V-1.0.1 HW BMUS-106(0502)
If I get an update firmware will advise.

I have one of these boxes and am learning to live with it's many quirks.
My manual record doesn't seem to lock up like yours does.
After using timed recording it does stay switched on and does not return to standby mode.
You cannot modify the repeat when recording, only when setting the timer to not record (ie. just switch channel).
Set Info (off the menu): SW V-1.0.1 HW BMUS-106(0502) (same as yours).

I have just found another quirk which happens on my box, can someone test theirs too?
If you set 2 recordings the first recording will always be for the length of the second timer.  Eg. if you set timer 1 to record TV1 for 5 minutes and you set timer 2 to record TV2 for 10 minutes then BOTH recordings will be 10 minutes long! (to test, make sure you leave enough time between the recordings, so at least 10 minutes in my example).
This has caused me problems before when the first recording isn't fully recorded due to a later recording being shorter.

Any news on any firmware updates?

I do have a firmware update, but it does not seem to do anything! I'm waiting for the fix to EPG program repeat and when thats here will put a url up linked to my web site with the firmware.

In hindsight, even though these are super value for money, I would pay more and get one with a dual tuner in the future. Its not much use when you want to record on another channel from the one you are watching. A big plus though I have found is with a decent USB drive you can have a HUGE collection of videos at command from the USB menu. It plays everything I have thrown at it.

I installed the latest firmware (Digistar0309.bin) from the supplier of my 811U but the software version has remained the same at v1.0.1 and all the issues have remained.
Do we/anyone know who creates this firmware or where it comes from? Could we send our issues direct to the manufacturer who I guess is somewhere in China?

I have bought two of these, the first instead of a media player, it works most of the time and has required the odd power off and on! apart from that actually good value for money.

Where did you get the firmware from, my inquires have come up blank!

I just asked the guy I bought it off TradeMe - it makes no difference though, it's still v1.0.1.
These devices are great for the price, they'd be excellent if they did everything they're supposed to 100% of the time. It's my main Freeview decoder, DivX player and PVR.

Yes, mines the same I have asked the supplier to give the mfg a hurry up, but my guess is that many if not most buyers would not pick these problems up through lack of knowledge so the makers would not hurry any changes.

PVR CONVERSION SOFTWARE.
Has anyone tried converting the MPG files recorded on PVR directory to DIVX? I have and using Virtualdub, have audio sync problems interested to hear how others convert?

I can convert the MPGs easily using Handbrake on a Mac to almost any format, DivX, iPhone, iTunes, MP4, etc. Not noticed any audio sync problems but not converted that many.
No sure if available for Windows or Linux though.

Handbrake is available for all OS's but I can only vouch for it working on OS X. You just open the MPG file rather than a DVD disk.

I have one of these - it changes channel by itself - seems to be at a similar time during the news each night (from TV 3 to TV2?)... Also powers itself off soon after that then appears to go OK for the rest of the evening... I too have not managed to work out how to set it for regaular recording (e.g. same program eacg week...) Same version as others in this thread...

Would be interested in possible Firmware upgrades or other solutions to these problems - particularly regular recording set up...

Emailed the seller and he sent me the firmware update (same one as above) - loaded it and it looks like it might have fixed the channel changing and power off problems but still can't work out how to program recording for regular time / day....

Its stupid I know, but you have to set it through the EPG without repeat. Then edit it in Timers in settings. You will lose the channel but just reinsert it and alls good. Im still waiting for the fixed firmware to sort that issue out.
Cheers.

What's the quality of these STB? Good picture and sound? Nice on-screen graphics? Responsive remote? Stable? Thanks in advance.
