I emailed support. Heard back within a few hours [edit - 12hours]. Turns out I had to turn off SSL support for Google Cloud Storage. Not sure if I am too happy about that, even though my data itself is encrypted.

I do have a high end i7, and GSC with 50 threads was hitting 240Mbps with encryption. (From memory 40 threads averaged 180Mbps)
Backblaze got up to about 170Mbps briefly but averaged around 20Mbps.

HDDs are raided so throughput is much higher than that.

Forgot to mention, sign up to Google Cloud Storage and you get a $300USD credit that lasts for 12 months.

So far I have gone through a couple of dollars uploading and understanding how it works with bucket browsing etc, and restoring.

I will see how much $ I am going through during normal use and compare it to backblaze. There seem to be benefits and disadvantages to both.

Using bucket located in the Asia region.

You guys should try Jottacloud, its unlimited backups (and machines) for less than $9 NZD per month if you sign up for a year (they also do month by month subscriptions).

They are located in Norway, so if you are worried about the US snooping on your backups, you won´t have to worry. And everything is encrypted, so there is nobody that would be able to get to your data in any case.

Have been very happy with the speed, it does incremental backups and you can set how much bandwidth resources it should use for doing backups. (Can be something to look at when doing initial backups, from memory the client is fairly conservative by default).

Has anyone found a decent peer to peer replacement?

I don't want or need to use cloud, happy to have family backup to my system and I backup my stuff to one of theirs...

I'm not sure there's a piece of software that does incremental backups that easily shares them with other PCs.

An incremental backup tool combined with Resilio Sync would do it.

CrashPlan is driving me mental trying to get my Archive under 5TB.

I'm not too concerned with losing my version history, or deleted files - so set it to only retain 90 days worth of version, and to not retain backups of deleted items. I then hit "Compact" and it spends hours and hours and hours "Pruning versions (deep)", but seems to give up before it has finished pruning or compacting the archive. So my archive size hasn't changed at all, still sitting at 7.3TB.

And now of course support is closed until Monday in the US, so can't even contact support until tomorrow.

Does anyone have any ideas about this?

So I migrated to Crashplan Pro, updated one of the various docker images to my own version so it doesn't default to the home version on update, and has the front end built in using noVNC. Migrated my data across instantly as it was less than 5TB and quite happy with it. Sure it costs more, but really how much value do I place on my personal files and images, especially with versioning so if I get an infection of some form I can always roll back after its been cleaned.

I use Xpenology to boot up Synology's Disk Station Manager 6 on custom hardware so can use their various apps to backup all my Linux and Windows machines as well as my Essentials Server backups... This way I get multi-system backup from a single place all versioned and controlled... I then store a copy of the running docker container online so that if I have to hose the entire machine, I can reinstall DSM pull the docker container, import and then pull my crashplan data back in with very little issue.

Nothing obvious, or anything that makes any sense to me.

Lots of entries in service log, but nothing that I could see that indicates an error.

And the service_error log is empty.

After it stops it just goes back to its normal backup schedule as if nothing happened, but the archive size is unchanged. After this the "Compact" button is then greyed out unless I restart the CrashPlan service.

Already tried clearing the cache, took about 24 hours to rebuild then the same thing happened when trying to compact again.

Interesting thought about the file verification though, I'll try pushing it way out to only do it every 30 days then manually run it once so it hopefully won't do it again.

On the backup schedule I have now set the schedule to never run (i.e. set to "specified times" but deselected all days), and have also disabled the "watch in real-time" settings.

Hopefully this will mean nothing can possibly interrupt it.

So by deactivating your Crashplan machines, you're now running the risk of not being able to restore any missing files that you had previously backed up in the Crashplan backup sets. This was why I continued with the Crashplan Pro account for now - I didn't want to cancel the plan straight away and lose all the backup history.

Their documentation is very clear about this - you should download deleted files before doing it.
