As an aside, this is why you shouldn't have your DNS registrar/hosting at the same place you're doing your website/email hosting. You should keep them separate so you don't run into issues like this where the hosting company can hold your domain hostage!

As for DNS registrars, metaname is a good no frills NZ registrar, support is usually pretty good. Not sure about any other NZ web/email hosters, I run all my own. But there's no reason you can't use an overseas webhost.

24/7 Hosting unfortunately seems to be a scam. If you have recently signed up, I would recommend doing a charge back, unless you have a important domain with them.

You will have the same problem if you register your domain at an unprofessional DNS registrar. Won't help you having them separate, the weakest link in that setup will be the DNS registrar since your services will effectively be down if your domain isn't working.

Seen some pretty horrible setups for DNS hosting. Primary and secondary DNS on the same network is one warning sign to look for. If something happens with their connectivity you can kiss access to your web site and email good bye until they fix their connection issues.

Its much more important to actually get a good provider, than to separate DNS and hosting.

After having another of my sites go down yesterday with no response or resolution from 247hosting I'm right now transferring my domains to 1stdomains.

Unfortunately one of them says the domain needs to be renewed and yet it's paid up until November this year. I assume my only option is to pay another fee to 1stdomains and get it transferred. A small price to get the site up again I suppose.

Yeah pay and fight later, heard a lot of stories regarding domain renewals not being processed by 24/7 properly.

Yep, I'm just reading through various reports on the web now. I've paid for this one and have set another to transfer over to see how long it takes. Once they are sorted I'll organise the rest.

The sad thing is I went with them after a couple of glowing reports on GZ, hopefully if people search in the future they will find the last couple of threads and not bother with them.

Unfortunately a company with brilliant record can as quickly go downhill with more than expected signups, decreasing number of people with CSR experience available, etc. I've seen it happening a lot with telcos/ISPs.

I was able to get their attention by entitling one of my service requests "You did not renew my domain". It was fixed within an hour after that. I have since moved to another host and am now trying to get a refund for my year's hosting fee which I had paid the week prior. They used to be ok but recently have taken a turn for the worst. Good luck all.

Maybe you should make a complaint to the NZ authority that governs domain names - http://dnc.org.nz/complaint

I also had problems with 247hosting.

I bough a hosting service for a client and after 1 week they didn't recognize my payment.

My client got upset with the delay and asked to move to another hosting company.

I have been asking for a refund even since and they never really answer my tickets. In fact some of my ticket are being closed without explanation.

Here are my tickets:

STAY AWAY from this company.

I am using OpenHost now and so far I am very happy. They offer great support.

It turns out 247hosting are taking your money for the year but are only paying for three months at a time. I'm just confirming the details for each of my domains with them right now as some are for three months, some are for a year. I'll then decide whether its worth arguing with them or not. My last couple of tickets have not been answered and neither is the phone.

I'll be contacting the Domain Name Commissioner regarding this, I suggest everyone else does the same.

Its a nightmare!!

I have taken a few steps in the hope something gets done about this shady company:
1. Contacted my bank and requested a charge back - I provided email and ticket evidence that the service being paid for was not received.
2. Made a complaint with the commerce commission

Soon as I know the outcome of the above ill post back.

24/7 are not an authorised .nz registrar so DNC would have to complain to the registrar they resell for.

If they accept payment for a term (e.g. 12 months) then they are absolutely obliged to regsiter the domain for that long.

Only registering for a few months at a time is a serious offence where prepayment has been made.
