As much as I'd love to have a datacentre down here, the extra 20-30ms to get to the rest of the world (~Invercargill -> Auckland) isn't ideal. It doubles the latency to Sydney for example.

Amazon has their ANZ AWS Summit next week... if they don't have an NZ region to announce, this will certainly be overshadowed by Microsoft's news.

They will need to be aggressive with pricing to be competitive. Throw in hybrid use licensing & Azure becomes very competitive when compared to other Tier 3/4 IAAS operators.

This is positive news, though I'm honestly surprised that Microsoft are bothering.  Their top 20 states by population have a greater population than our country.  I wonder if this may be to help grease the wheels of NZ Government cloud adoption?

Could be - government wants to migrate services to the cloud but keeping it onshore is a necessity

I thought Guvmnt was looking at using the Canberra Azure site which is only for secure guvment services both Au and NZ.

Regardless this is good news, anyone who uses one of the big three cloud services is reminded daily that its 30odd mSec away, it makes a big difference

One of the articles announcing this mentioned the parliamentary services 365 migration was put on hold last year because of Aussies new encryption backdoor law, so it's entirely possible there has been some discussions between Microsoft and the government. Either way it's a definite win for NZ.

I was sure I had heard previously that DIA had loosened up about data sovereignty, but can't get much more sovereign than in NZ. I wonder if they are also just interested in more diverse data locations in politically stable countries as well. And physically stable, as long as they choose the right region...
