freitasm: Talking about account settings, none of the changes I made yesterday are there (upload speed, SSL use, etc).

It seems the load balancing could have caused sync problems in their database?

Yeah, same here..

Also, what does the contacts feature do? Is it just an address book? Or can you send #Mega files to your contacts etc ??

Hi all,

Transfers weren't working for me until today. However if I select a folder of images to upload it appears to stall after not quite halfway and is showing no progress.

Speed and time fields are now blank.

Bugger, still some teething issues with uploading by the looks of it.

Hi and welcome to Geekzone!

Yeah, you'd probably best wait until things have died done... or until Kim Dotcom sorts out his website.

freitasm:
gzt: Dotcom still plans to go ahead with the advertising client and says there are big misunderstandings about this. He is talking about replacing only a few ads from major sites or major publishers. I didn't quite get it. Possibly just google search ads. This is interesting strategy. Particularly if google ads are the only ones replaced. He mentions a figure around replacing 10% of advertising a user will see. He gives a kind of justification for this based on moral grounds that google is benefiting from users searching for 'illegal' content and this replacement will redirect revenue directly to artists.

What kind of "moral grounds" does he have to justify replacing the ads showing on my web pages with his own, depriving myself and my family of my income?

He's not sticking it to the big man only, he's crippling the revenue people make for a living, you know?

That's the thing. He appears to be talking only about replacing ads only on one or two major sites/pages like google itself so that is not actually an issue. Your criticism is still very valid of course if you were making a living from paid search advertising on the google search result pages themselves.

According to the NBR:

"Here’s how we’ll do it at first. Only 10 percent of the ads you see will be ‘adjusted.’ This is not a general removal of ads. We’re not going to replace ads off small publishers, for example, or sites that have an Alexa rating below 100. That is not our goal. We’ll be taking it [ad revenue] from the big guys, and giving it to the smaller artists."

Note it's not only on Google pages but other sites as well. Comments from Russell Brown:

"[Megakey] will hurt small website publishers, such as his own Public Address. Online ad revenue mean enough as it is without MegaKey  replacing the few ads do get booked."

And from Don Christie:

"The ad revenue diversion is certainly problematic. But consider this, the MegaKey technology is basically spyware and nasty substitution technology. It’s spyware because it will report on the site you are visiting (how else would it know if it was a top 100) and it could presumably substitute *anything* on your web page. Not just ads. Links, keywords, pictures, anything. This sort of technology is not new, simply a nasty virus that Dotcom seems to be trying to legitimise.

Dotcom can expect public sympathy when it is deserved, but we shouldn't give him a free ride.""

These echo my impressions.

Good to see some details finally. Public Address will not be affected at all because it will not be in the Alexa top 100.

But if Public Address ever did hit the top 100 for a day - it is very unlikely but maybe if Keith Ng discovers a top secret u.s nuclear research facility deep in the Victoria tunnel - and assuming Public Address is using Google Ads then I guess R.Brown would be mighty hacked off with Mega getting a free chunk of his best daily revenue ever while R.Brown pays for the bandwidth. No doubt the top 100 sites will feel exactly the same if Mega's advertising client users grow to any great extent.

The problem for Mega is this approach to advertising is likely to cause relationship problems with influential parties who are also potential partners. That may not work out very well. Mega will also be looking at legal challenges to this approach - whether or not these legal challenges have any legal merit at all.

Mega should look at a slightly different approach.

Personally I am unlikely to use the advertising client for a host of reasons.

I will almost certainly use the file storage and then later will pay for additional storage as it stabilizes. It is a very good deal in that respect.

I am very likely to purchase music and movies through the service as they become available.

They might make it free by making you download a freeware with ads..

Yep. Stop at the border in the USA, the officer asks for documents, and you say "Just a minute officer while a log into my mega.co.nz account". Off to the full body scan...

Yes, sure. And knowing people have an irrational hate of ads and block them on legitimate sites, I can see this working well... Not.

Some "non-clouded" thinking here.

Worse, we have become deeply entangled in Dotcom's legal problems. Our Government's stupid decision to give him residence here, and its incompetent surveillance and arrest of him, is dragging it and the country ever deeper into Dotcom's murky world.

We will find it very hard to get rid of Dotcom. If he wins his case against extradition to the US he will be too scared to travel abroad for fear the US will have another go at him. If he loses his case, appeals and delays will drag on for what will seem like eternity.

Meanwhile, he clearly loves life here as he plays the role of internet hero to local and global audiences. New Zealand's reputation can weather this. Every country has its share of such comic fantasists.

Anyone with a bit of sense knows true internet pioneers brilliantly devise and deliver valuable services for others, as have the founders of companies such as Apple, Google and Facebook; or fight heroically for principles, as Aaron Swartz did - as his recent obituary in The Economist testifies.

While many in our internet community can spot the difference, some of them are far too enamoured of Dotcom for their own good or the country's. They acknowledge his fatal flaws but think he can help fast-forward New Zealand's internet development.

That... is what I think is "over-the-top" Mr Oram!

Quick update on Mega: uploads are finally working, settings in the "My Account" section are saving, and downloading is also working (even from China (my cousin) )

Next part is to wait for the extras! :)

Quite a while I suspect.  A NZ website can only be taken down via a NZ court not by the US gov.  They could of course try to block it.  It will also depend on how much lobbying goes on from the entertainment industry.  Mega.co.nz must be giving them nightmares just with that name..
