Hi There!

I'd be interested in what your employers have done that has made your job easier to learn or understand, or made it easier for you to adjust to working at your new place of employment. Equally interested to hear what employers feel they have done well to help staff adjust or have found staff respond well to.

Cheers

Andre

Handbook of company procedures is always good. Assignment of very accessible mentor/peer who you can go to for help or to ask questions. Teaming up with a more senior member when asked to perform a new task. What's the job?

When I started *my* first real job, my boss gave me a list of all the open support tickets and told me to get onto them. I picked up the first one in the list and called my contact at Vodafone. He was all '...Ah, we logged a ticket about that? How long ago? 6 months... Yeah... ah, yeah, just close that one.' SUCCESS.

Roughly 5 years later when I started at Vodafone, he asked me to run some database procedures on the SMSC on the first Friday I was there because he was on call and was hoping for at least one night's sleep that week. I couldn't quite remember the procedure (it was an older version of the software) so I had a quick look at the script. The header said:

## SG 06/99

Yeah... it was *my* script. It's a small industry: I've known him for 16 years now, and he's also here at 2degrees.

Now get off my lawn.

training via web conference + forums to get further advice, also a support desk to call should I mindblank at anystage,
As for initially starting at the company 8 weeks of "training" learning the systems and procedures, then a further 4 weeks of mentoring for the role...

would you believe I work in a call centre.

How big is the company?
If you are talking about a big company that runs a call centre, then that would have a different orientation procedure to starting in a mechanics workshop as the receptionist.

But in both, things can be done to make it easier for the newcomer.

we have a powhiri to welcome all new staff, an induction that runs from 2 days to a week depending on the role of staff within the organisation and we run training on site with our staff and third parties from first aid training up to management training.
We are quite a big organisaiton though.
