As for reasons not to put filters in play, the article I've linked above, makes far more sense to me than any of the technical arguments I keep seeing presented.

My biggest concern with technical arguments is that often they're wrong and this just creates ammo for folk wanting to push their infrastructure.

The article above doesn't talk to me as much about technical issues, but trust and global issues which the technology in these filtering systems actually can't provide assurances (to me anyway) of addressing acceptably.

I'm glad you changed your views, even though it took a newspaper article to change you from being a proponent of blocking and filtering.

I'm glad you're starting to understand my view.

I wanted to put the issue out there for some discussion.

However the minute I started discussion people jumped on me as proposing the scope change.

To me a 'proposal' would be my sending the minister a paper out lining recommendations and then pursuing such, not opening the issue up for some discussion.

It strikes me that if the questions occurred to me then there are others behind closed doors who are pushing this technology who are pushing the agenda.

Personally I'd like to see more discussion about this stuff in open spaces like Geekzone.

I think it's important to keep evaluating this stuff and not just resign ourselves to acceptance that we've lost the battle to keep it out of the network so just walk away.

Someone commented on the INZ list that this technology is costing squilians of tax payer dollars while not actually being useful (at least that's how I read it).

I'm all for giving technology a go, but if technology isn't working then you don't keep throwing money at it, you find a new solution, don't you?

Oh I agree with that bit.

Perhaps not for the same reasons, but I totally agree with any suggestion that what ever I wrote clearly didn't convey what I was thinking, else I doubt I'd have been jumped on as I feel I was.

I would also accept any suggestion that I may not have properly understood what others were saying, or trying to say as well.

To me, this is an important issue, which is why I choose to spend time talking about it, but I do apologise if I've offended folk.

I wonder how long before there's a black market Internet then, when the next Internet is just a layer encapsulated within the Internet everywhere. It might get there with the more big brother and money thrown at it gets to a tipping point of stupidity. Then the need for it will go through a natural bust of it's own.

Very much so. I know it's been around for yonks, but there was the need for it before more and more privacy was being done away with like it is these days. How much so in the future? I see a filter as much as I see the law, I hugely respect it and don't try to break it, but it's only there to judge those that do break it, it doesn't really mean anything in today's technology age if someone doesn't want to be a user of it.

I wish I could remember what it was I was watching the other night about filtering, surveillance and which will win in the end. But I don't believe there'll be a hard and fast end, such as once filtering is in place it'll never be removed. There's always a work around for everything, technology and evolution doesn't sit on the fence, even if something as simple as a VPN becomes tomorrows norm.
