Not sure if this may be the end to parallel importing of some goods. I don't think this deal is going to be great for NZ consumers. I think it will benefit the rich in NZ more the middle and lower class. Maybe it will make NZ a richer country as a whole, and bring in more income, but that often doesn't all filter down into the lower classes.

A source doesn't necessarily make it fact though, as they are also often third party. Especially when related to this subject since it was supposed to be all confidential. Behodar: I think I saw something from Tim Groser a few weeks ago where he said that parallel imports will not be banned under TPP... but we'll need to wait for the full text to know for sure.

The press release in an earlier thread said that parallel importing is not changed..

Now the deal is signed, the process of governments selling it to their own electorates is beginning. There is still a short period where they have monopoly of information advantage ; ).

why , there's only a vocal minority who actually care, most people couldn't care less.

Surely - unless there was specific provision to allow parallel importing - then any corporation would have an opening to sue NZ government for financial harm, that being a "given" because if it didn't cause harm, then that corporation wouldn't mind the parallel importing anyway.

The concern about PHARMAC was/is widespread. If there is no real impact it will not be a problem. It is likely our government will take a similar approach to Canada and increase subsidies for the affected area.

Canada's dairy subsidy increase is a sure election winner for next week but they will have problems sustaining it in the long term.

Another 100m on our pharmac budget (i think that was a govt estimate) it won't break the bank and it is probably sustainable but it does start changing the structure of our pharmaceutical market. I'm pretty sure they have not agreed to drug company supervision of the buying process that would be pretty bad.

Yet.
As the details come out, I don't expect devils - just some presently unseen (or undisclosed) dead rats to crawl out one by one.
Anyway - the US has to get this through congress. The republicans will put up a hell of a fight if there's any chance of it being perceived as being some kind of a glorious legacy from Obama.

I suspect you might have the real conspiracy theory here - one which seems to be based on the concept that anyone expressing caution and not jumping for joy about a deal for which we don't know the details, must be conspiring against gullible "believers".
