Are there likely to be any problems connecting to local carriers if the handset comes from Australia?

I like the look of the Pixel2 and have a trip to Australia coming up, so can likely buy there and avoid import duty, but I would hate to get it back here and find that I can't connect to Spark...

There shouldn't be any problems. The Aussie model will most likely be the international model and support aggregation etc. I think it's usually just the US which has funky CDMA and GSM bands.... but i'm no expert so *shrug*

Cost me $1396 for the phone, $109 for express freight - $1500 total.

Could have save $60 on freight if I wanted - i had to pay Californian sales tax which was about 7%, so bumped the price up a bit (but managed to avoid GST at customs so saved a fair chunk there).

Pretty keen to be able to pour cold-water on all the theoretical problems that might occur with it now... lol

Just bought a US-NZ plug adapter - my first piece of advice is buy one first to save the agonising feeling of having a new phone with no way to charge it. (i assumed USB-C was what the standard phone - samsung etc., - had) So the only cable it comes with is UBS-C to USB-C so you can't charge off your PC etc without adaptors.

Anyway, just to be warned, i'm upgrading from a Blackberry leap (go ahead and laugh... but some people actually still use blackberry's). So my review will be somewhat skewed because I've never actually owned an android phone prior. However, Blackberry 10 OS is a super simple UI, in theory if it had come onto the scene earlier it would have been a serious contender with android, because it is just so easy, yet functional and I prefer it iver my limited experience with android. However, I expect to be wowed by the battery, the processing speed, the web browsing, the screen and the AI, and the rest of the smart tech.

Will keep you posted...

First update: It good. Really good.

Now to address the issues everybody's scared about...

Blue-tint: Yes it's there, but no it's not an issue. You don't have to turn your screen on much of an angle to notice it, but tbh if there hadn't been any hype about it I probably wouldn't have really thought anything of it. Had I experienced it before bought it, it wouldn't have impacted my purchasing decision at all.

Burn-in: haven't noticed this at all. Don't know if it might happen after a few days.... but right now it's not an issue

Clicking noises: Zilch

On the positive side, the battery's every bit as good as reviews say. Very nice feel. Looks a little bland, not quite as 'flashy' as a samsung, but overall i'm pretty impressed. Really fast browsing (not sure how it compares with other good phones out there because my blackberry was ultra slow0.

I haven't had a chance to try the camera out in depth, seems good though.

let me know as I'm going to Australia in 3 weeks time so will be getting one from there as well.

Sadly it seems youshop is slow this week so I won't have my phone for a while yet. Last time I ordered via the quick service the item was in my hand within 3 days of paying.

This time not so lucky! - It did only cost $30 though so can't complain too much

I'm so pissed off

I ordered from Expert Infotech instead of Dick Smith because they claimed to have the Pixel 2 at their warehouse and 1 day shipping for pickup at their store

Friday last week they claimed it sold out after my call and said they are shipping one from their supplier that should arrive on Wednesday at the latest, on Wednesday it changed to Friday, over a week from my initial order

I cancelled my order, now I'm taking a mirrorless camera and my old phone on my trip instead

For anyone that is interested. I bought a pixel 2 xl 128gb black via jbhi.com.au on the day it was launched in Aussie and got it shipped to my brothers place in Sydney. I came her this week on a trip and just used it for a day and the device is beautiful and very very fast and flawless. My only issue being my hands are very tiny and the device is quite big so thinking of selling it when i come back to NZ on Monday.

Such a shame... I was looking for this device for a while and was so excited to open it and use it for 2 days but the bloody size of the device sucks and i am back on my iPhone 6.. So gutted.. If anyone is interested in buying the device (with jb receipt), please pm me.
