bonkiebonks: I've only just got mine, and I'm coming from the iPhone.

The Android appstore is a bit of a mess unlike the Apple App Store. Android feels kinda like Windows Mobile, where there are lots of hack available, and the whole thing is a mess really. I like how the iPhone's iOS feels organised, and clean.

In terms of build quality, it doesn't even come close to the iPhone, but it's not too bad either.

I've not yet felt the lag (probably cause it's still new), but the spec is pretty impressive.

So yeah, these are my views - obviously there will be lots of people who will disagree with me.

Yeah its best to go to one of the sites that list all the apps and have them all organized. Then you can just scan in the code on your phone for the app you want and it will download automatically and install.
try www.androlib.com but yes the market needs a bit of work....
some areas of the android experience definitely arent as polished as iphone but you have freedom :)

Just reading the modaco forums, it isn't looking great... They are saying its definitely a hardware issue caused be samsung using an internal sdcard for storage rather than a much faster nand memory.....

So we have to choose between 130 mb of quick storage on the Desire, or 1.6 gb of slower storage on the SGS, until we can move apps to the external SD card? I'd pick more storage over quicker storage personally.

Is yours going any faster with Launcher Beta? if you've rooted it :S

And are you running Advanced Task manager? No slow downs here, running on killing medium security apps every 30 min :)

LauncherPro was very unstable, so uninstalled. Strangely since uninstalling it and going back to TouchWiz its running quickly with no lags whatsoever (like it did out the box, except with a few dozen apps on it instead). Not sure what that means exactly...

I haven't heard of anyone doing it.. and it might just be the internals of a sd card and soldered on.. so might not be that easy..

At the moment they have found this...
there is 130 megs free in the nand which is faster than the internal sd card.
They are moving the data folder to the nand and putting symlinks to it, apparently it makes the phone far faster in general, from launching apps to scrolling and gets rid of the lag.
The problem is there is only 130 megs free on the nand and if your programs write more data it can cause serious problems...

Someone has done some speed tests.. the internal sd card seems to be slower than a class 6 microsd card..
and a class 6 sd card is getting closer to the speeds of the nand in the phone..
probably putting a class 10 card in the external slot and then moving the data folder to that and sym linking it could be a winner...
Im debating on whether to splash out on a class 10 card and try it.... hoping someone else does first :)

Teardown shows no removeable memory cards, so I'm guessing it must be soldered on Samsung memory chips

This slow down issues seems to be luck of the draw? Where did you get it from Kilack? Hopefully people who aren't having the issue won't get it later on :(

Evo - screens pealing away, but still an amazing phone, if you are on CDMA in the states only

Droid X - Absolutely humongous, rolla interface slows it down, slow camera, display not as crisp as SAMOLED, HD videos are washed out,

Samsung - reports of slowdowns, cheap build(user based though, I actually like the plastic feel of my Spica and Galaxy S!!!)

Think we should band together and make the first NZ Android phone, the Geekphone

Screen, processor off Samsung, camera off the Droid X(with faster UI), HTC Evo body, mmmm

I bet these companies are glad of the negative hype surrounding the iPhone 4 at the moment!

Takes the heat from them somewhat...

Maybe Apple should be spinning this lot up instead of trying to refute that their product has issues.

I follow a few of overseas tech blogsites (mainly CNet's Crave and Endgaget) and I don't recall seeing any comments there about all laggy stuff on the Galaxy S. I would have thought they would be all over something like this. Did I miss it?

indeed just like samsung did :)

Lets face it most reviewers have a quick play with a few apps and that is it.
Never compares to proper use. It isn't until users get their hands on phones that the bugs start to come out.
I am sure it will make its way to those sites eventually, some sites are just a lot faster than others :)
modaco, xda, phandroid all those kinds of sites where users are involved, that is where you will find out what phones are really like.

If you want very early details of phones before they are relased, check out www.howardforums.com.
There are many technicians from big companies like moto that leak details to it regularly...

They are annoying, especially when the rest of the phone is so good, but you can live with them...
The build quality is fine, just not the same feel as something like a nexus one that feels solid.

I'd wait if I was you, if you arent in a rush, see what samsung say, if the issue is fixable etc.
Some people are saying that their phones starting off only with small lags and it got worse and worse which is what worries me.

The droid x is out almost and there should be a milestone x shortly after so if the lag issue isnt fixable on these you could look at that which maybe even better anyway....

Hmm I need to get a phone within the next few weeks, im wondering if maybe the HTC Desire maybe a better option than the Galaxy S if the Galaxy S has a hardware issue ...

Damn its a hard choice... Better specs/screen on galaxy s or prehaps a more reliable HTC Desire,,

OK, I'm on Modaco custom ROM with Root access ;)

Suggestions for what to install first?

May try the stall fix from Modaco too, just need to check if I have enough space!

Thanks Vin... I expected it to be embedded but the way people suggested it was an SD card......
perhaps it's more a batch issue and some aren't fitted with the higher speed chipset???

Eitherway IF it is a valid issue then it seems that it is a relatively easy fix in the next production run. (Relative to say redesigning your case and antennae arrangement that is....)
