After all the buzz I'm am a little underwhelmed by the max volume I can wring out of my One. I'm unsure if perhaps my phone has a fault. I have wound the sound settings up to max but dont really think the volume is much louder than my wife's Galaxy 2 or my daughters One X. If I was hearing them working as intended should I be left in no doubt that these babies are loud suckers?

No, your unit is not faulty (or at least I think it unlikely). Many users guilty of getting a bit carried away describing the speakers I'm afraid. If you look back through this thread you will see that I said I don't actually think mine is even as loud as the S4, however the quality of the sound is a lot better (trying listening to some music from the One Vs the One X for example).

That's it - now I have to get one! I currently have the HTC Sensation and find the ring tones quite quiet, even at full volume. Years of maltreatment (working in noisy environments without protection, playing in rock bands, deep diving) means my ears are shot. I can't hear cicadas, because the permanent ringing in my ears is pretty much the same frequency. People are always asking me "Is that your phone?" when I haven't heard a thing. A ring tone with real volume could be the deciding factor!

TBO sounds like you need hearing aides of some sort Id say - or at least a hearing check from a professional.
Im in the health area and I need aides myself so I know what its like.
Sorry to be slightly off topic but the HTC One speakers "sound" really good.

haha with regards to dropbox and zoe, took a few zoe photos yesterday for fun and dropbox folder was synced with about 300 photos. gota be careful next time

That's the only downside of Zoe right now. One Zoe = 20 images. It can easy add up!

So in a very unscientific manner I used an SPL meter to compare identical ringtones at full volume between my One X and my One.
The levels recorded were very dependant on what ringtone was playing, but I found that the One was generally 3-5 dB louder than the X.
For someone like Andrew027 it's as much about the pitch as it is about the loudness. A ringtone consisting of cicada chirps would be useless whereas a foghorn might be just right. In that respect the quality of the speakers may play a part.
Watching a movie using just the phone speakers on the One is easier, possibly because of their position as much as anything. Can't compare with the S2,S3 or S4 as I don't own them.

Edit: While doing the above experiment I noted that whereas the X has options for different notifications to be used for different events, i.e. text, email, calendar, etc there is no longer the option in the One. Or are those settings hidden elsewhere?

Generally each app will offer the ability to choose its own notification sound.

Yes, that's true. I did have a hearing test several years ago and probably should have another one.

Also true - it's often when sound is at a similar frequency to my tinnitus that I have the problem. Perhaps I just need to create some custom ringtones that are quite different from the standard HTC ones.

Does anybody know where I can get a Batman case for the One? I love Batman, my favourite superhero, and have a case on my SGS3. Not sure if I would use it or not because the One is a beautiful device, but would like to have the option.

Has anyone on either the One or the S4 had a look at 'Smart IR Remote for HTC One' (or S4) in the Play Store?

When I looked the HTC One version only had 100+ downloads but all favourable comments. $US10 is maybe a little steep for a punt, but it looks promising compared to the stock (Peel) app.

iPolice lol. Actualy its a little worse for me than even what is described. not only was i in the iTemple.. after i brought a hardcase for a Retina the staff member needed a fondle of the HTC One (i could tell by the glances he was giving it)... and after that he nearly cried as he wanted one but had to have an iPhone obviously lol. poor sod.
then the 3 people who sat down to either surf or mistook me for an informative caring type and asked me where the head-candy was; were also convinced to not get iPhone 5s but HTC Ones across the road. i even walked one lady over on my way out and had her signed up with the provider lol.

HTC One players - 3 / iPhone 5 lovers - 0

I'm very happy with my battery so far.

After the first few day of not being able to put it down and sucking the life out it somewhat fast.

I'm now back to using it for work calls/texts and quick updates and other fast odds and ends.

Which means receiving a boat load of calls, making a few and texting, checking stuff.co.nz each morning/afternoon, checking facebook about the same, note I only read things sent to me or I have been tagged in, can't be @ssed reading about what someone had for lunch etc. So only short amount of screen time.
Use's of a few other apps, but again, no messing around, do what needs to be done and turn the screen off. I keep wifi, data and bluetooth off unless using them.

As I post this, I have 56% left after 2 days 5 hours 24 mins and 18 sec

Works for me :)

Response I got from Live chatting with one of the HTC representatives.

"Unlocking the bootloader on any HTC device actually prevents the phone from receiving official updates. This is because OTA updates are signed and phones with unlocked bootloaders will not be able to verify the signature."

Wow, I never realised rooting would be this difficult on HTC devices.

Within hours of release the OTA is turned into a flashable update by the folks over at XDA anyway.

Also by being rooted you can run the latest WWE ROM without having to wait 6 months for a Telco update.

S-off has been sorted for the One, which means we'll be able to flash any firmware version and do a full return to stock with factory locked bootloader if necessary.
