I just want root, I don't need a custom ROM though I want to retain the ability to if I want to. That's why I don't want Knox.

It isn't a matter of tripping knox the whole point is that you can't modify or that will trip knox, its fine if you only ever want to use Odin to flash updates but if you want root access or to use custom Roms you are knackered.

I'm on a custom Rom 4.2.2 (Sammy) that has a patched kernel meaning it has the old bootloader without Knox so I'm happy.

I'm not sure how much I would care about tripping knox anyway but if there is a way around it I'm happy to go there, especially as I'll be changing phone within next few months.

The problem I see is the S5 probably comes with Knox built in, and no way to remove it. I would want to stay with Samsung when I upgrade to my next phone (S5/S6) mostly for the physical button, but if they prevent me using my phone the way I want to then I'll bite the bullet and change. Sony looks to be making some nice phones these days.

Knox is here to stay that is for sure and I'm sure it isn't just to upset dev's and people wanting to modify their phones.

The only thing it really does when tripped is show its been modified so warranties are a bit harder. I'm sure Samsung is well aware of the perils of producing an android phone that can't be customized as they may as well just be another IOS or WP device.

Mosty likely I will end up tripping knox but holding out as long as I can. Watching the Sammy 4.2.2 custom Rom threads in XDA most seem to ignore the fact its tripped.

I don't really give a da** if I trip knox if all that does if I can't run apps in the knox sandbox. If I can still root, put on custom OS's, etc, I don't care. Is that the case right now? Because I would like 4.4.2, and stock is generally preferred over custom.

What's the best mp4 video player for the S4 on 4.2.2? Ideally something that can take advantage of any hardware acceleration that's available, if that even matters/applies. Mostly want a player that reduces battery use for a long flight.

Yes that's pretty much it it affects nothing really but you won't be able to downgrade to previous version but why would you.

Ah so I can unroot (no idea how), get the 4.4.2 upgrade (when available), then root again? I need root for automation and my custom boot loader for backups... is that possible?

not sure why you need to un-root if you are going to use odin but, yes, you can do that or just flash hDJembey's pre rooted roms through Odin, they are stock

Are there other ROMs based on Touchwiz but with some of the rubbish stripped out? I spent quite a bit of time getting rid of junk from 4.2.2.

I don't care what my knox flag is so long as I can still do whatever I want with my phone.

I don't care what my knox flag is so long as I can still do whatever I want with my phone.

this one has a bit of the samsung bloat striped but is still old bootloader so doesn't have Knox at all, you flash through Custom recovery but need to do full wipe.

Wanam is always good but has new bootloader so will trip knox when you root.

bloat remover is a good way to do it as you just edit the scripts to remove what you wnat then, when you flash new roms, you just run the script.

Awesome, thanks. No real problem doing a full wipe, probably give it a bit of time for everything to settle down and the early adopters to sort out the bugs :)

So after being on Google Rom for nearly 2 Months. I am coming back to Samsung Rom. Going to try latest 4.4.2 rom and see how much has changed. For some reason was missing S Health and Camera features...
