kiwijunglist: Appbrain website is better than browsing the market. Install a barcode scanner on your phone, so you just scan the barcode on appbrain to install the app, otherwise you can synch ur phone to your appbrain account and install the apps automatically. Was going to update a post above but there's no edit button - suppose there's a time limit. So, sorry for having to post again.

Found another update.zip on the interwebs and this time succeeded in the rooting process, if you'll pardon the expression. Downloaded one click lag fix but haven't installed it yet.

Any caveats I should be aware of?

Being a "lady", the whole "rooting" business seems a bit crass but I understand it's about gaining access to the root of the smart phone.

I wouldn't even bother with OCLF. I'd go straight to flashing the Doc_Kalpik rom. And it gives you the root and superuser rights straight away with busybox and a real decent kernel that's whiz bang fast. But I also know it's not for everyone and perhaps quite a leap when the phone is still new to you.

The URL has been mentioned here before, but here it is again. The most important information is truly on the first few posts. If you can follow that, then you'll not need to read through the 3000+ posts (yes, it really is that popular).

I'm still on V6 of the ROM and without any lag fix. The phone is so quick, I can't see the point of a lag fix, but you wont be disappointed, there's various lag fixes you can apply if you feel the need.

The url doesn't cover backing up your phone, specifically the EFS data (to prevent IMEI related problems?) I don't fully understand it all, but just know it's important to back this up. You might want to back your existing kernal/rom/csc/phone etc before flashing. Again I havn't done this myself yet, but maybe someone else can chime in with a guide.

Thanks for the heads-up on the fancy ROM. You're quite correct that the newness of the device has me biting my lip at the prospect of futzing with such potentially brick-inducing activity. However, I expect there will be ways to recover from any ham-headedness on my part, so I shall look into it.

Judging by your comments, I'd be right in guessing that Samsung's ROM leaves a bit to be desired in the performance department, lag notwithstanding? I haven't noticed any lag as yet but the number of comments on this forum and all over the web seem to indicate that it's an issue. Which is why I "copulated" my SGS and am looking to Froyo the device sooner than later. (Bit of PC language crept in there...

And I reboot the phone several times a day (for dev reasons) so the lag is probably mitigated by that. Or not...

As soon as I rooted the phone, I downloaded Titanium Backup and chose "All" (although I had to back each file up individually. There's got to be a better way...). Whether or not the files/folders you mention were included in the list covered by "All" is something I can't answer. I wasn't paying attention to the specifics, having figured that "All" probably means all. But I've been wrong before - many times, actually - so I'll also look into those particular areas of potential nastiness.

the /efs folder isn't visible, even with Rooting the phone you'll need an application like Root Explorer (paid app but cheap as chips really). Then you can copy the folder and paste it to your internal SD card (or external if you have one).

The nv_data.bin file is in the /efs folder, and it's that file you'll need should your IMEI change, but it hasn't for me, and only a few very unfortunate people that I've read have had this happen. The ROMs have been flashed by so many people and one only I've seen has said their IMEI changed, but I don't think it was through this process.

The change IMEI is only a problem if your carrier blocks duplicate numbers. The one person I've ready on the forum that has had that happened (and I don't know through which process) doesn't care because his carrier doesn't block duplicate IMEI's.

Titanium Backup wont backup the /efs, it's about the apps and data, and system data, but not /efs.

Root Explorer requires super user rights - but you've got that with having rooted the phone.

Use ROM Manager to take a backup of your phone before you flash with a new ROM. That way if you decide you don't like the new ROM, or whatever reason, you've got the backup to then restore (again in ROM Manager). ROM Manager is both free and paid. I only use the free version for what I need.

Yes, there's an option: Reboot into Recovery.

The new ROM that Doc_Kalpik have, in the themes allows for these extras when you press the Power button:
Reboot
Recover
Download

Pretty hand I'd say :)

Forgive the noobosity of this question, but which ROM should I be considering - XWJPA v7.5 or XXJPO v7.5?

I assume, possibly wrongly, that each is for a different market, but I don't see in the instructions which ROM would be relevant to EnZed.

I recently upgraded to 2.2 ZSJP8 (Hong Kong with traditional Chinese firmware), and downloaded Angry Bird (which supports App2SD). When I added the app onto my home screen (Touch Wiz UI not the Defualt android home screen), upon rebooting my device, it disappears from the home screen. Further investigation reveals that Angry Bird was saved onto external SD by default. Once I moved it back to internal memory, the problem is solved.

So is this normal that any app that is saved into the external SD which has been added to the touch wiz UI will disappear upon rebooting the device?

Putting things on the external_sd can seem them take a few minutes to fully load. So you boot up, get the desktop and the icon appears to be broken. If you go away for anywhere up to several minutes - depending how many apps are installed - then the icon may be loaded and the app work properly.

I stopped using apps2sd. Don't need it for space. The lag on boot isn't worth any placebo effect in reduced lag at other times.

I've found some app lag worse than others.

Twydroyd Pro can *seriously* lag...while Touiteur does not. Twicca also does not lag.

Tweetdeck lags terribly with several accounts....but hardly at all with just one.

....and so on.

that's a very popular question on the Forum. Basically it comes down to your own preference. Many try both and decide which they like most. One I think is more for the Asian market and the other European - but I don't recall which. I think both Doc and Kalpik are using JPO, and that's the one I'll be choosing. Not that I expect to influence anyone ;-)

Just so you know, the first time you flash does take a long time. I counted the number of times the S sparkled (yes I'm a bit anal like that) and it was 51 times. So don't panic if it seems a long time. The 51 times was for v6 (from v5.1.1 (which took 31 sparkles)). It may well be different with v7. Flashing the theme (Dena) took 63 sparkles of the S.

There's a lot going on with the phone with the changes.

As for your earlier observation about the lack of lag. I agree, if there's no additional apps loaded there's no lag. But what fun is there without a few apps? I've got 53 additional apps and it did lag until I went with the new ROM.

1. Yes But the backup is useless if you're going from 2.1 to 2.2 as Eclair and Froyo treat the apps different
2. Recommended by Doc as it does INclude the /efs
3. I do this, I like to have it and name it a I choose to easily restore the phone to the same state it was when I took the backup - not essential
4. I do this too, and I copy the folder and add the date to the folder. But if you've done step 2, then this isn't necessary as you can get the /efs from the nandroid backup
