EDIT: Kies taking forever to update, will have to flash tomorrow. Probably for the best, get to see if its worth it!!!

Is there a direct link for the latest Kies, rather than an in-situ upgrade? I'm still having a world of trouble getting Kies to see my SGS, so will do a full uninstall with Revo first to see if that fixes it - specifically, when I set the USB setting to either Ask On Connection or Samsung Kies, the phone 'cycles' repeatedly between the home screen and MTP application screen (the one with the USB connection picture).

Any fix for this would be greatly appreciated, as it's a royal PITA!

ArtooDetoo: This should've been an edit, but the Edit button has vanished again, so...

Neets - downloaded the Swype zip and installed "successfully" with CWM but it doesn't show up in the Settings for input and there's no long press action on the Samsung std keyboard that enables it either.

So there's definitely something wrong with my ROM installation. Time to revert to Eclair and start afresh I think.

[Sighs, slowly shakes head and rolls eyes...]

Just did a quick search. Seems others have encountered problems with the swype k/b appearing. Here's someone's suggestion.

Neets: That's right, it's been mentioned on the Whirlpool and XDA forums. The backup of your apps from an Eclair build doesn't work with Froyo. You can install the apps, but not the data.

No it's fine to restore third-party apps and data, just don't restore system apps and/or data.

Had a notification this morning that I have a latest Kies available. Updated it, but no new firmware for the phone yet.

If Kies is not seeing the phone, try uninstalling the Samsung USB driver and then reboot and reconnect phone. I had the same problem where Kies wouldn't see the phone so did the above and it worked fine.

Install kies
Delete certain drivers (can't remember if it was all drivers or just 2 of them, I think I deleted all drivers that were associated with the phone/samsung)
Reboot windows
I think at this stage you make sure kies is not running, but I can't remember 100%
Connect phone, windows will detect new hardware and auto install drivers
Now kies recognises phone

Edit: you also have to set touchwhiz as default launcher + be on the home screen for it to work. Can't remember if I have usb debuging off or on.

HTPC / Home automation (home assistant) enthusiast.

I think at this stage you make sure kies is not running, but I can't remember 100%
Connect phone, windows will detect new hardware and auto install drivers
Now kies recognises phone

I used windows the first few times, ended up using kies driver recovery because it was easier... and I don't think I've needed to repair them since?

Roll on 11-12 Nov (or so I've heard) for 2.2. Then we won't need to use it again until samsung release Gingerbread in Dec 2015 probably

Is this still the best Android phone to get? Any drawbacks with this?

Jailbroken Iphone 3G too slow/old now and I'm considering upgrading.
Would rather not get an iPhone 4 but its still an option.

The 2.2 update is rolling out now, if you got yours from the UK like most of us then it should already be available in Kies...

Regards this handset in the Android pecking order: For me overall I think this still has the goods, providing you're prepared to install some fixes for things like the lag issue. The Desire HD/Z are also worth looking at. What are the reasons you're less keen on an iPhone 4?

-Not a fan of Apples restrictions and mentality
-Lack of flash is a pain for browsing
-Itunes
-Itunes again

I do like the fact that there are a lot of handy accessories and products aimed at Iphones ie my bedside alarm clock has an iphone dock on the top so it charges my phone overnight etc, just one example.
You also see car makers touting iphone accessories as they know its the trendy thing.

Im willing to support the android bandwagon with my consumer dollars rather than pay Apple.
I hope Android keeps getting better and better.
I would like all the features of a top end phone but dont have the time to be applying complicated tweaks to make something work.
Jailbreaking is definitely worthwhile for me as I can get extras I couldnt otherwise have but its still a pain in the butt.

Im guessing the Galaxy S and the HTC desire HD are the two top of the line androids?

I'd say so - for the moment at least.

I came from an iphone and after adjusting to Android, I can't say I'd personally go back. The SGS is an awesome phone and will get much better as the software still doesn't really take advantage of the hardware.

Eclair which originally came with the SGS was a bit of a pain but froyo seems to have solved most issues, which makes it in my eyes, a better overall package than the iphone 4.

One thing about the SGS though... Kies is nasty... make sure you get comfortable with Odin.
