Kies is like Samsungs version of iTunes, used to manage the phone and software updates. It's probably 100 times worse than iTunes though. iTunes at least works.

Odin is a utility to allow you to update the phone firmware without using Samsung Kies. It's not pretty but it just does the job.

I would like all the features of a top end phone but dont have the time to be applying complicated tweaks to make something work.
Jailbreaking is definitely worthwhile for me as I can get extras I couldnt otherwise have but its still a pain in the butt.

What sort of features are after and I am sure the Android gang can let you know what needs tweaking (if anything) and what doesnt

Hi Murray - I'm wondering...I'm on stock JP6 installed via Kies (...93_82, IIRC) using the registry hack.

When 'our' Froyo comes out, I'm wondering if I can use the registry hack to pretend to be a current NZ Eclair...and coax Kies into installing a new Froyo on my phone. I'm assuming it just wipes and replaces without much regard for what is already there. I'd likely do a factory reset first just to make sure my phone is as plain as possible.

Or...should I flash down to Eclair and then do it?

Any idea?

Froyo JP6 improved lag a lot.....but some apps just lag (Twydroyd Pro at times, for example)....so I avoid using them and use alternatives that don't lag....and I've been generally successful with that.

@webup - Android is a tweakers phone.

I think HTC Desire HD maybe the better phone if you don't mind the larger size because of 1. Camera is really good, 2. It's made by HTC not Samsung. They should end up being approximately the same price.

Hi Neets.

I really appreciate you taking me under your wing like this. I'm slowly getting the hang of things, but your help has been invaluable. Which is a segway into a small success, down to your contribution of course.

I think I might have had a dodgy factory reset the first time around, there being a message that made me make some choices I wasn't expecting. Needless to say my track record in choosing stuff I know nothing about is not exactly stellar.

Tonight I decided to do another factory reset which errored but gave me options again. This time I chose the backup and restore option and the restore went through quickly and no hitches I could detect. Re-flashed into the new ROM which also went quite quickly, and no errors. Booted, set up the basics and then rebooted into CWM for the attempt at re-installing Swype from the zip file.

Success.

So Swype is back which makes me much more sanguine about the chances of having a working GPS, Google maps and such when I try to recover them as well. (If not, I'll be whingeing and bleating here I suppose).

So, again, thanks a sack-load for your help and encouragement. It's peeps like you that make communities like this.

it was XXJPO V7.5 (as copied and pasted directly from the site, hence the nasty large and bold font).

I chose the most popular launcher, based on all the comments I've seen on the innertubes, and whose name I have since forgotten. Something Launcher. Does it matter? Prolly not.

So you reckon my appreciation for your help was OTT? Seemed totally consistent with the euphoria I was feeling when I wrote that, and I'm still chuffed to bits. So if you're ever in the need for a CV, I'm your man!!!

Off to attempt recovery on sundry other apps 'n stuff.

webup: Is this still the best Android phone to get? Any drawbacks with this?

Jailbroken Iphone 3G too slow/old now and I'm considering upgrading.
Would rather not get an iPhone 4 but its still an option.

Depends on how much of a tinkerer you are. I just switched from an iPhone 2G! - I'm not all that interested in flashing firmwares etc (I have plenty of other things like 3d printers I would much rather spend my free time on), I just want a usable fast replacement that doesn't have the tie-in to itunes and the apple iron fist controlling it.

In my opinion the SGS with out of the box eclair firmware is unusable for email. The built-in client is missing basic features (like move a message to another folder). K-9 is a great replacement (e.g. I can now mark all messages in a folder as read, one of the reasons I haded the iphone mail client). However, both are unusably slow on a stock SGS (we're talking >10min to check a folder and get down say 20 small messages). And it's the sort of thing that you don't notice when having a quick play around in a shop.

Last night I 1) rooted the phone, 2) re-enabled the 3 button recovery mode that is disabled in stock VF phones, 3) installed OCLF lagfix.

After doing this, the email in particular is significantly faster and now takes seconds to populate a folder. The phone now runs as it should do out of the box and I'm very happy. Regular users should not have to jump through these hoops. Maybe things will be better when samsung comes out with their Froyo firmware.

Bummer about the gig disappearing Neets. Been there, had that a couple of times. Now I'm happily self-unemployed (otherwise known as a freelancer) and I couldn't imagine ever being a full time employee again. Security is an illusion, but when you work for yourself, insecurity becomes the norm and eventually it ceases to mean anything.

So there's an upside if you can get your head around the paradigm shift.

Yup, LauncherPro is the beastie. Lots of good words about it on the tubes, so I'm good with it replacing TW. Got the missing apps back with a couple of minor exceptions. Still don't have the Samsung updater though, which would prolly have sped things up a bit, but so far I don't feel I'm missing anything.

I feel a bit bleeding edge but having built a few Hackint0sh desktops and notebooks, the hack on the SGS was oddly drama free, even with the issues I had (which I believe were my fault anyway), so the lip-biting phase has gone. I will be keenly anticipating the Froyo feedback from the community once the 'official' version is released. This hack appears to be going smoothly so far so I may not need the Sammy update unless I have a warranty issue in the future.

We shall see.

Now to download umpteen 'must-have', might-be-good' and 'complete-waste-of-time' apps to waste even more time than I have done to this point.

how do i set default launcher in froyo. homeswitcher no longer works and I can't find the option to clear defaults under settings -> manage applications.

EDIT: nevermind figured it out

Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> View All -> TW Launcher -> Clear Defaults

Also within 15 minutes of running froyo i have lag when using the messaging app, 2 secound pause. :( also lots of lag when swiping this is really awful. i hate samsung.

EDIT: nevermind figured it out

Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> View All -> TW Launcher -> Clear Defaults

That works....or sometimes a quick way is to install another launcher and then touch Home....it will offer a choice of launchers....and you set a new default. Then you go to the Market and uninstall the launcher you used to provoke the switch option (so you can install it again when you want to provoke the switch again).

I keep an *.apk for a launcher- whatever - handy for this reason. It's faster to open a file manager and install that than waiting for Manage Applications to populate so i can scroll waaay down and clear defaults. :-)

it populated for me instantly. I just expeted Twlauncher to be listed under running apps and couldn't find it.
