Yo all...

Out of curiosity, I installed Quadrant Standard benchmark and ran it. Result is 961 - 961 whats, you may ask? I haven't a clue. But according to the app, the Nexus one scores lots more running 2.2+ whatever that may be. Overclocked perhaps?

Anyhoo... the result for the SGS is slightly higher than the vanilla version so I'm guessing the Froyo ROMzilla I'm using is a little more optimised in some way.

Anybody else benchmarked their modded SGS?

There are varying opinions about the usefulness of the scores. Some think the score is the be all and end all and the proof of their ROM being fast.

Then there's another camp that say if it feels snappier (love how that's become the "in" term) then it doesn't matter what the score is.

I haven't run a Quadrant score on the ROM I'm using. I don't care about the score. I know the ROM is "snappier" so the number means nothing to me. It could of course be a higher number but I'm not even mildly curious ;-)

One of the useful things is for comparison between before and after settings, so it's certainly of some value if you're a tweaker. I certainly fit that description, so it's worth the 2 minutes it took to download and run the benchmark. It gives me a baseline for reference.

If the subjective impression is that it feels snappier, then that's a result in itself, so who needs benchmarks? Well, that'd be me. Feeling snappier is good, but I don't think I'm objective enough to trust my senses here. But certainly, feeling things are quicker or smoother or whatever is the best result. And I hope that I'll get that feeling when I tinker with stuff.

the problem lies in that quadrant scores don't necessarily equate with how fast the cellphone performs in daily useage. ie, some roms can be designed to give the fastest quadrant scores, whereas other roms are designed to give the fastest user experience.

DrD: Any suggestion of what & where to get for a car charger for Galaxy S.
Vodafone have them for $30 & ebay for ~$9 all up.
Anyone got one that they particularly like?

I bought a 150w DC to AC inverter for the car. $69 at DSE, IIRC. It provides power to a single AC "house" power socket...and you can plug in anything as long as you don't draw more than 150w / 4amps.

Rather than have a dozen different car adapters, this lets me have one device that can recharge anything I can plug into the wall...and a mains to USB power adaptor plugged into the inverter covers the iPod(s), too.

Most devices draw little enough power you can plug in a 4-block and have a couple of devices charging up rather than just one.If the car battery gets too low, the device sounds an alarm and shuts off....and you resume in 15-20 minutes once the car battery is charged up again (assuming you're driving all that time).

Nexus One is a better, faster phone than the Galxy S. It's faster with better GPS and multi-tasks MUCH more smoothly than the Galaxy S. Nexus One is lag-less.

But the Galaxy S has a better screen, camera, faster graphics, more internal app storage...and internal sd.

Overall.....the Galaxy S is a 'better' device if you can live with its faults.

If Samsung can make a Galaxy S phone that runs like the Nexus One, then people....we will have a winner.

I'd be happy to have one of each. The Nexus for all day, everyday use...and the Galaxy S for those features the Nexus hasn't got.

My stock jh1 scored around 860 - after applying voodoo lagfix, I get around 1850. . . . And it's night and day in terms of everyday speed.

I have done in past ROMs but not on the current one. I've got the app on my phone so I'll give it a whirl.

EDIT: It's having a hell of a job running! It's stuck in fact. Maybe my phone is too fast for it to keep up with ;-)

Well this is the 3rd time I've tried, this time after a reboot. It gets stuck on the I/O, only gets to 1/4. Not sure what's happening, whether it's taking too long with the File system writes - probably it's r/o where ever it's trying to get. Would change it to r/w if I knew what directory it needed. Sorry, no luck here.

EDIT: Left it alone and it did finish. 943. See, to me that's nuts, this is the fastest my phone has ever run, and I don't have any lagfix applied. The result doesn't marry with the user experience :)

When it gets to I/O 1/4 it appears to have stopped but you just have to wait - it will go on and complete.

interesting. Your subjective impressions match your benchmark quite well I think.

On the basis of the score, your SGS would be right up there with the nexus One, if not higher. Looks like a stock SGS could really benefit from some optimisation to make a really nice phone even better. I suppose though, that the match between ROM and lagfix would be important - Voodoo and jh1 seem to be a very good fit. Good to know and maybe some suitably clued-up techie might figure out what makes that combo fly as it does.

I, however, have no clue about OS optimisation so I'll take the lead from those who have had success, such as yourself. Thanks for the response.

I have no doubt that your user experience is on the money in terms of the improvement, regardless of the seemingly modest score returned. The benefit, I'm guessing, being in improvements in the tasks you most commonly use your phone for. There's also the possibility that your benchmark score may well have been lower prior to your current ROM - much like my phone I suspect, even though I have not experienced any lag that I can remember.

Although I am now running Froyo, I can't say I notice any extra snappiness in everyday tasks. I am pleased about the stereo FM fix though and that alone has made the upgrade worthwhile to me. I'm going to install Flash next to see how it runs. And if that works well, then the Froyo update will be doubly worthwhile for me, even if the benchmark is unspectacular and subjectively the device doen't seem any snappier.

Compared to the E63 and E71, it's already a fantastic improvement.
