ArtooDetoo: PS: Agree with you about the camera - it's only acceptable in conditions of high ambient light, something that I think is less to do with the sensor and optics than the software that decodes and processes it. Hopefully some clever dude/dudette will make a hack for that as well.

I think the sensor and optics are not up to low light conditions.

Yep, it's the slim version. But I'm sure I took the zip file so I could pick and choose (remove apps) which extra apps I wanted to install. So I take it ThinkFree works ok? I've never used it - which is why I didn't care it wasn't included .... until now ;-)

Yes I had a quick try before I posted :-) You could just save as txt/docx files and then import those, or you can select and cut and paste from ThinkFree to the browser if you need. Saving separate entries in separate files may make life easier. I must admit I don't usually use ThinkFree for composition, usually just for reading email attachments (for which it is essential).

anyone rooted a captivate. im thinking of getting one to use on XT. the telecom one is outside of my price range. from what i can see, the captivate is only missing the front facing camera which i dont mind doing without.

'ello again all...

A quick followup from the benchmark post from a couple of pages back - I took the plunge with OCLF 2.0 and Quadrant now reports the SGS at 1939 which compares favourably with the previous score. Numbers aside though, subjectively the phone feels more responsive with very smooth flinging, flicking and scrolling. Overall, I'm pleased with the improvement but I will have to leave the device up for some time (a week maybe?) to see what effect that has on its smoothness. I'm also installing more apps as that seems to be a trigger for lag, as peeps here have confirmed.

And on that note, anybody suggest a site with lots of mobile optimised Flash videos - movie trailers, music vids - that kinda thing? Itching to give Flash 10 a workout. :-D Ta in advance. (Loving this phone)...

I downloaded Odin 1.3 as it was the latest I could find, but that was a few days back, an eternity in hacking time. :-)

I got it from XDA.

Can't help with the other questions sorry. Not familiar with Chainfire. With my track record on this stuff, I'm not the best one to take recommendations from. And I'm more of a noob than most here, so...

Good luck with your chosen route though (no pun intended).

Yeah, I've been using it a bit.

Some quite nice ideas, I like the tabs and settings interface with side-swipes, but its implementation could be a bit better (for example if you're on the far right side of a page and scroll the other way, it should stop at the other egde, rather than continuing to open the tabs sidebar, at the moment they open far too easily).

Its very slow compared to the inbuilt browser, much slower to open also.

Extensions are mostly incompatible with the latest version, however if you check 'force compatibility' in Settings they do all seem to work (the ones I tried anyways).

Main PITA for me is the fact that I cannot get Firefox sync to work, which would be one of the main reasons to use it (being a Firefox user on my laptop).

Certainly showing me enough to think it holds some promise.

Opera Mobile with hardware acceleration coming out in the next couple of days is likely to be far more usable off the bat.

I used 1.17.3 and then when I had Titanium Backup on, pressed the "problems" button which put it to 1.15 something.

Yes, use chainfire's way to get 2e recovery and root, very simple. I've used it several times as I've gone between different ROMs and it's quick and easy.

Not sure where I picked Odin up, it came as part of a zip for some other thing. Anyway there's a guide on the Doc_Kalpik thread which has a link to Odin. Here's the guide:

Has anyone else had an issue with the phone rebooting randomly about every day or 2? It seems to be when it is sitting idol, like very loudly in the middle of last night. (almost crapped myself). It hasn't happened while I've been using it yet.

Sounds faulty, my phone has never randomly rebooted in the 3 months or so that I've had it and I've flashed several different firmwares and in general messed around with everything.

Have you been using Bluetooth accessories? There is a known bug in Android that causes this when you've been connected to a Bluetooth accessory and then the accessory gets switched off or goes out of range. It is not fixed in Froyo either. The only workaround is to turn off Bluetooth on the phone when you've finished with it.

In general random reboots are a kernel panic and usually mean a driver problem or in extreme cases an app problem.

Bluetooth is always off. I'm thinking either a phone fault or an app is causing it.

I might have to remove all apps and see if it still happens and then reinstall them one at a time... that could take a little while.

I was hoping some others might have the same issue. then compare apps to see if we have a match

Neets: I have flash on my phone and it works really nicely, hope your experience is the same. How are you going using swype?

I prefer SlideIt to Swype.

SlideIt has "shortcuts". These 3-letter combos that can represent much longer character strings - or custom strings (like passwords). Once you learn a few of them it gets even faster. You can also define your own.

Swype seems to accumulate part-words that "hide" more common words. After a week or so of daily use it starts to become imperative you go into Swype clean out these fragments or Swype can become 'semi-useful', constantly throwing up strings that are complete rubbish or just wrong.

Swype also seems to lag badly on the SGS.....whereas SlideIt can lag a little....but nowhere near as bad as Swype.
