Any particular reason over other ROMS? Just wondering which one to flash as my first custom ROM.

I have been favoring the criskelorom myself; lots of features, reliable, etc.

On 2degrees. But that shouldn't matter - just flash the appropriate modem for telecom. You'll have to do that for all roms.

I've been running Cognition S2 with the SpeedMod kernel for a while, and the combo works great. Not too many changes from stock, and I'm easily getting 2 days between charges.

You don't have to worry too much about finding a Telecom modem with this phone. The original Galaxy S needed different modems because the Telecom version ran on different frequencies to the Vodafone/international version, and the phone hardware was slightly different. The SGS2 has quad-band 3G, so the hardware is the same for all networks in NZ.

Some people with the sgs2 are finding modems specifically written for the 850mhz band give better and more reliable performance.

The sgs 1 had different models for 850mhz and 900mhz; a simple swap of modem firmware was not all that was required to change bands; however the sgs2 is quad band as you say and does not suffer that annoyance. Still, picking the right firmware for the modem for your provider can reportedly improve results. Threads on XDA about it IIRC.

Thanks everyone for the input! Used your guide Brendan to get initial root. Thanks for that. I did wonder with the s2 being quad band 3g, the necessity to flash a modem separately but i can certainly understand that some modems may optimise performance on certain 3g bands. I did flash litening rom initially. but i'm slightly confused on something after the flash.

The original telecom wallpaper remained after the flash, which tells me it is a non wipe rom. Is this correct? I expected everything to be completely wiped. This surprised me, or have i done something wrong?

Being used to the Captivate for the last year, I'm still used to the 4 capacitive buttons. The large home button isnt quite to my liking. I'll get used to it!

Might get me a download jig as not too keen on holding down the home button for excessive amounts of time, or this isnt a biggie?

Pleased to help.

No, it simply means that particular rom did not replace that particular image. There are various messages on XDA about removing or changing such things, but my advice is to leave it - it's not worth the bother.

Some roms change all that stuff - I never had such a screen, as mine was a parallel import.

Not a biggie. You only need to hold it down for a second or so after the initial samsung logo shows anyway.

But you seldom need to do that anyway: many roms have a shut down screen that allows you to shut down to download mode anyway (no button holding).

The jig is only useful for removing the yellow triangle and going into download mode if you have a bad flash. Worth having but don't kill yourself. The sgs2 is harder to brick than the sgs 1, and it was pretty good too.

(the sgs 2 has two bootloaders IIRC, and it boots from both in turn or something?)

fergis: So many guides about updating to 2.3.4 say "Install Supercore using ODIN" but I have been unable to find any detailed instructions of how to do this. Any ideas?

I have looked through Brendan's guide and canot see anything relevant...

Fergis not sure if anyone has given you the info but here is a link, its a bit old but shows the basics of rooting so just download whatever kernel is associated with rom you are interested in.

Cheers for that Brendan. I actually used your guide for the whole flashing procedure and gave me confidence to use Odin and havent used it often in the past. No probs, won't worry about things left over, I assumed it was a "bad flash" .

Really starting to enjoy the S2's goodness!

In the end i went with DLev's ROM 1.1 Based on KH3 and 2.3.4.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1237495

Primarily for the reason that he had built my favourite and current ROM for the Galaxy S captivate, so was wanting essentially to continue the current experience that i had with the Captivate to my S2, to help familiarise my way round it. My Cappy was pretty kickass with a custom ROM, but the S2 takes that to a whole new level.

Veryyyyy impressed! All the other ROMs look great as well so will eventually try them at some stage.

Damager: All the other ROMs look great as well so will eventually try them at some stage.

IMHO the problem with the roms at the moment is that there seems to be very little difference between them. Most of the features or tweaks seem to be also available separately and the only real difference is the theme, or lack thereof. As far as I can see it depends if you want to get into it and incorporate the tweaks yourself or just pick a nice package and run with it. I'm generalising (dangerous I know) but is that the feeling from others as well?

I've only run three different roms (not including updates) in the last four months, and have read up on a few more. I stuck with Lite'ning because it was simple and I'd used it the most. It was the first rom I flashed as it rooted it at the same time, had what I wanted and I liked the theme (this was in May, there were only about 4 or 5 roms then!).

Just making a backup before installing DarkyRom2...
