I don't like the way SlideIT doesn't auto space when you type the words 'I' and 'a' after a swyped word.

I managed to apply custom theme to doc's rom. I applied samsung theme, then added battery % to the icon and changed the notification bar to solid black

I used a slightly different method

1. Download the theme you want from the doc thread

Choose JPO or JPA depending on which rom you are running

2. Open the theme's .zip file and find framework-res.apk

3. Goto UOT Kitchen website http://circle.glx.nl/

4. Choose the options you want
eg. Circle Battery Mod , Black status Bar, Transparent Status Bar, etc.
For Bootscreen animation you must not change any options
ie. Leave it as no boot screen mod and HT Sense rom

5. It will ask you to upload the framework-res.apk file from the theme

6. Wait a while

7. Download a new version of framework-res.apk with your modifications

8. Overwrite the old version within the zip files with your new version

9. Copy to phones SD Card

10. Reboot into recovery mode, and apply zip from from SD card

Very easy to do.

If you are running some other theme you can actually use a file explorer or an app from the market to generate a framework file for your specific phone, that you can subsequently apply the UOT kitchen mode to.

I think the sensor and optics are not up to low light conditions.

It's possible, of course - stranger things have happened. But Samsung have been making well-respected consumer camera hardware for more than a decade and it appears to be their own S5K4E2 CMOS image sensor that's in the SGS, something that was well-received by the specialist press on its launch.

It's connected to an NEC MC-10170 controller/processor and it's my guess that's where the performance is suffering. Poor firmware implementation or crap driver. I hope it gets improved as it's really average vs the Galaxy S's standard in most other respects. I may search the innertubes when I get time, to see what's being written by the techies. All I know is that the camera gets a C minus from me as it currently stands. :-(

Still, hard row to find the perfect phone, eh? :D

So, how's the newly rooted and lag-fixed SGS running now?

Get rid of all those friggin' Contacts history items...

If you've been forced to clear out all those history items chronicaling every sodding call, MMS and SMS (that you ever sent or received) - ONE AT A TIME!!! - then I have good news for you.

Open Contacts, click the History tab and when you've stopped being gob-smacked at all the worthless recorded rubbish therein, tap the Menu button and hit Delete. Android will helpfully tell you that SNS messages can't be deleted. Why it tells you that when you're just trying to empty the History cache, I do not know.

But help is at hand, thanks to a poster on an obscure Android Fansite.

His fix... "when you get the message 'SNS messages cannot be deleted', tap the greyed-out tick that says 'don't show this again'. Now go for 'Delete' and magically, at the top of the screen, you will now have a 'select all' tick to tap.

Tap the tick, hit 'Delete' and hey presto all your history is gone. :-) in one tap, more or less."

So there you have it. It works, as I can attest, and I am jolly pleased that it does because deleting them one at a time was doing my head in. Why the 'Select all' tick box isn't shown by default is a curious Androidy mystery. Why the delete confirmation dialog quacks on about not being able to delete SNS messages in a History screen is a history mystery.

Maybe they'll fix that in Gingerbread.

If this has already been posted, then ignore it entirely.

And while I'm at it, I've seen somewhere a list of Wifi hotspots. Does anyone have the link to that? Looking for free Wifi at cafes etc in Queenstown. Cheers.

Also...Install Wifi Analayzer (free- needs no data) or Wifi Trak (paid - but needs datafor maps)....and detect wifi near you.

Thanks, I've installed Wifi Analyzer, though I'm not quite sure where it's different. When I get to work my status bar tells me there are Wifi connections close by Not that I can connect to Wifi at work (security etc). Thanks for the suggestion though. I'll keep it and see when I get to Q'town how it figures things out.

I tend to go the other way and think its the sensor and lens. There is a limit on how much noise can be cleaned up by software etc and without a decent lens size or sensor then yeah you need a lot of light to compensate, nothing can make up for a better size lens and sensor.
It's definitely one of the weaker parts of the galaxy s, and yes samsung have made decent cameras before but this isn't one of them, one of the weaker cameras on phones out there unfortunately, if it was a firmware issue they would have dealt with it by now, they have released about 10 eclair versions already and what.. 3-5 froyo versions?

So.. Skype put out a new version tonight.
With eclair the first version wouldn't let you sign in (instant error)
This new version it just sits there forever saying signing in..

Anyone else on eclair can confirm its the same for them? interested if its still working on froyo too.

I was on froyo but "downgraded" back to eclair today. froyo is just too slow and the browser is such a hog.. :)

Was surprised at the hype over froyo to be honest.. it took a long time for samsung to get eclair decent so ill wait until later versions.. froyo official jpo/jpa still seem pretty much betas really.

As a general rule, you're dead on the money. But that doesn't explain how other phones with their tiny lenses and tiny sensors produce a very acceptable image. Samsung's offering is going to appear in many other handsets over the coming months, so if you're correct, there're going to be many other handsets with mediocre images out there quite soon.

At least we'll know that the camera/optics is the issue then. But I'm sure you'll agree that if the upcoming phones with the Samsung components don't suffer the problems that we're seeing with the SGS, then it's decoding and processing. If I'm way off base in my guess, I'll man-up and post that I was wrong though.

But I hope you're wrong, and it's fixable through FM/SW updates. [crosses fingers, rubs lucky rabbit's foot, polishes leaves of 4-leaf clover and sacrifices small mammal], because I really don't want to believe that the SGS has such an achilles heel.

Time, as they say, will tell.

hey guys well i ve taken the plunge and got me a galaxy s ...now my mate just said that the lcd screen under the tough glass cracks even if u drop it on carpet ????? and samsung don't replace it as its a droped ph your fault ......????????

Well, I've got to admit that in the last few days my swype experience is lagging (again). And Tweetdeck lags when scrolling.

Maybe I'll have to install a lag fix after all.

I had OCLF 2.-0 lag fix on my rooted SGS before upgrading to Froyo...and initially there seemed to be an improvement. But after a week or so it lagged anyway....so I have not bothered with any lagfix on Froyo as I don't think the fix is permanent. It may even be a placebo as the phone runs really fast for a week or so anyway - lag-fixed or not - until you start to fill it up with lots of apps. Also, I noticed that specific apps lag....not all apps. So I have tried alternatives to lagging apps and had some success. Even more interesting, Handcent SMS was one of the lagging apps, but the recent "performance" upgrade (last couple of days) seems to have reduced the lag.

Tweetdeck lags if you have multiple accounts, but behaves fairly well if you only have one account.
Touiteur Premium (one account again) doesn't lag. Twidroyd Pro can lag really badly.....(but I have 3 accounts defined)

There is more going on here than RFS, I think.

There are strategies that can almost eliminate lag provided you choose apps that tend to not lag. What makes one app lag and another not......I don't know, maybe just app size...but it's worth looking into.

Sounds a bit FUD-ish. Not that I think you should go about dropping your SGS on the carpet or anything, but I knocked mine off the armrest of a sofa onto a wooden floor and no cracks or dents or display anomolies. If you think you're likely to drop it, try an impact attenuationg cover for it - cheap insurance at $30-ish for a pack of 2. There's bound to be a thread or two about, with recommended cases/bumpers, I'm sure.

I imagine your household insurance policy will cover breakage if you ask. I think my deductible is $50, so busting the device won't be painful - I've backed up my apps and data so even that shouldn't be an issue.

Enjoy the SGS. I sure am.
