Haven't heard that one before... I've dropped mine on carpet a few times now with no issues. Sounds like your mate might have a case of the green eyed monster. (or owns an iphone)

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

Must depend on how it falls. I've fumbled mine out of my hands a couple of times onto carpet with no issues. But I work hard to ensure I have a firm and stable grip when using the phone. That means making a conscious commitment to NOT trying to multitask with hands already busy with the $1000 phone. I put it away first, then do what needs doing. That way, you almost never, ever drop it....unless you don't make sure it's going into a pocket and instead just drop it down the front of your shirt (like I did...)....so I add a wee "make certain the phone is REALLY in the pocket" routine before releasing it. :-)

Don't drop it. Best solution ever. :-)

kiwijunglist: I don't like the way SlideIT doesn't auto space when you type the words 'I' and 'a' after a swyped word.

Must be a settable option. Mine auto-spaces after I or a.

My galaxy has a crack in the top corner of the glass. Not sure how out it happened. Maybe sat on it in back pocket.

I think lag fix makes a huge difference, but I have never tried oclf or any of the market lag fixes, I've only used the ones you have to instal via the recovery menu.

Does it auto space before you type i. Mine does space after but not before. Swipe does before and after.

Thanks, I've installed Wifi Analyzer, though I'm not quite sure where it's different. When I get to work my status bar tells me there are Wifi connections close by Not that I can connect to Wifi at work (security etc). Thanks for the suggestion though. I'll keep it and see when I get to Q'town how it figures things out.

It just gives you more information.... :-)

Since this is The-Mother-Of-All-Galaxy-S-Threads™ (hereinafter known as TMOAGST™), here's an observation. Prior to my switching to Doc's ROM, housekeeping tasks like deleting emails from my inbox and emptying the trash took 2-3 times as long as they do now. That's possibly due in part to the ROM, or it may be down to the OCLF 2.0 effects (different file system I think?).

Whichever, that's a real world result and maybe others could try the same and share their results. I haven't had the new system up long enough, nor have I had enough apps installed, to confidently recommend the changes I made, but the experience so far is that everyday housekeeping is significantly quicker than on Eclair vanilla install.

That may not be a revelation to anybody here, but I though I'd contribute it anyway. If the situation changes for the worse, I'll respond in the future with an udate.

I'm the mate .. and I own a HTC 7 Trophy :P

However, it's not the glass or casing etc that broke, the actual AMOLED display inside did. He's the 2nd person I know to have broken the display on one of these phones from a drop. The other one dropped it onto lino.

OCLF is not a true lag fix, it only mounts a loopback ext2 partition on top of the RFS partition in /data/. This means it appears to be a lot faster in benchmarks however suffers from the same fragmentation issues as RFS. ext2 is also known to have corruption issues due to not having journalling. The lag fixes that replace rfs with either jfs or ext4 are the most successful in the long run.

So you're saying Doc's ROM doesn't really use EXT4 even when you choose that option when installing it?

Sounds a bit FUD-ish. Not that I think you should go about dropping your SGS on the carpet or anything, but I knocked mine off the armrest of a sofa onto a wooden floor and no cracks or dents or display anomolies. If you think you're likely to drop it, try an impact attenuationg cover for it - cheap insurance at $30-ish for a pack of 2. There's bound to be a thread or two about, with recommended cases/bumpers, I'm sure.

I imagine your household insurance policy will cover breakage if you ask. I think my deductible is $50, so busting the device won't be painful - I've backed up my apps and data so even that shouldn't be an issue.

Yikes, I haven't dropped mine once. I guess that's because it's either on the bed (yes, I sleep with it, don't we all?) or I am on the floor - with my phone of course (hours stretching after hard training sessions). Maybe you've got big arms R2D2 or you need really wide arm rests :P

$50 is cheap as chips. I'm sure ours is much more than that, but like you, I understand the contents insurance covers the phone.
