PottsyNZ:

Couple of years? With  the speed the smartphone is going? Yeah...sure..

I recently upgraded to a new iPhone 4, and that will be doing me for AT LEAST two years, but probably double that. Its effectively replacing a phone I've had since 2005.

Not everybody has the luxury of keeping up to date with every advance in technology, and the iPhone has sufficient functionality to keep me very happy for many years. Its SMS experience (my major bugbear with my last phone) is far superior to my old phone, and it actually has a workable still and video camera. And thats not to mention a mobile internet experience that is actually useful (WAP was never that to me).

Sure, it will be considered "obsolete" in comparison to other mobile communication devices on the market before the end of the year, but the functionality upgrade across the board when compared to the phone it is replacing will allow me to be happy using it for many years (and considering its nearly $1300 price tag, I'd expect it to).

I think the latest android phones will have a lower shelf life for me, because I really want an android phone with a very good camera in low light situations, and such a phone doesn't exist yet.

Oh yeah I was coming from the point of view that I have a Ideos U8150 :)
-  and the X5 will low end this time next yer with the dual core bollocks and such.

Certainly if I had laid out $1300 for a phone, it would be with me for years - but I'd never pay that much for something that lives in my pocket

InspectorGadget:
kiwijunglist: it's also for sale online for $549 on the 2degrees website

Like most people, before laying down some serious coin for a phone that I will have to use for a couple of year at least, I want to pick it up and experience it before laying down the cash.
It is a shame that 2Degrees didn't anticipate most people would have this need on day one and prepare for it.

+1 on that.  But I'd add its a common problem across all Telcos (and their retail stores).

It is a very smart strategy on Google's part.  They have developed a loyal consumer group out of the anti-Apple crowd, and the group that Apple left behind (unwilling or unable to fork out $1K on a phone).  They then developed a revenue stream out of this group (e.g. App store and advertising)

Following on from that, they have also stated that updates (which drive, or are linked to hardware replacements) will occur on 6 monthly cycles, ensuring that the manufacturers (handset sales) buy into it along with the telcos (data charges and profits on the handsets).

In short

Android owners will be upgrading more often, but at a cheaper buy-in per cycle.  That is the price of a smartphone these days.

I can actually confirm, it does not come with an FM radio .... and that is a bif sore point for me, their press releases and nearly every tech site states it does. Even 2 degrees seem surprised it didn't. Unfortunately their website makes no mention and that is the stand they are taking, even though their staff showed me the specs on GSMArena when I went in store.

Interesting . . . . because the press release stating the specs for the X5 for the NZ market which Huawei released at CES on the 6th of Feb state that it does have an FM radio

It doesn't have an FM radio. The 2degrees press release does not say it has FM radio. The official IDEOS X5 page does not mention FM radio.

Not all specs you find on GSMarena are correct.

Yes, very correct. However, as I mentioned to 2degrees .... they may want to educate their staff to not refer to GSMArena when selling phones.

For me it was a $550 lesson and a bargain for someone on Trade Me
