I had various connection issues on KI3 and specially GPS was a pain. Everytime i start the Google Maps or Navigation, it took while to get a proper signal (sometimes about 30 mins) and always start the map in europe instead of pointing to NZ. I downloaded GPS fix and discovered that by default on KI3 the GPS server was pointing to europe, so once changed to asia, i could get gps fix in say 10 mins. So i thought if i change my kernel/modem/firmware to NZ then maybe my GPS will work faster?

The network speed on vodafone on KI3 was ok same to KG1 not speedy though. Someone i met had a NZ sgs2 and the browsing speed was about 3megs per sec(i hardly get above 2).

Is XXKE7 android 2.3.3 or what? I know KI3 was 2.3.5. does anyone have a link that i can download XXKE7 from?

There are two different threads on XDA that contain download links for different modem versions. I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for on one of them.

OT: Ice Cream Sandwich is now official. Engadget have a list of new features that were added to it, and there's some stuff in there that looks interesting. I can't wait for Samsung to release an ICS firmware for the SGS2! (And they will - they've promised at least 18 months of updates for any phone models they release.)

swisshardy: Hi Guys

Does anyone have a usb jig for sgs2 in Wellington that i can borrow for a day or two? Want to remove the rom count on the phone. Would appreciate if any one can help? Also since i have never used the usb jig, does anyone know how to use it to remove the rom count?

On a separate note, i bought my sgs2  from expert infotech and it came it KH1 kernel which i suppose is from Europe and i installed KI3 on it but was wondering if it would be better to install a NZ kernel. Does anyone know how and from where to get a stock kernel for NZ??

Appreciate the help.

I have a jig I can get down to you if there isn't anyone close just let me know.

Not an expert but not sure kernal will make any differance, possibly the modem (firmware ) may depending on your carrier. I'm XT running KI3 modem and have had no issues but keenly watching others experiences on here.

What sort of speeds do you get with the KI3 Modem?

Been varied depending on where I am, In Onehunga I avg 7.59-9.89 mbps upload the same about .93mbps. In Sandringham I getting only 4.12-5.92.  Thats using Speed Test, I'll try KG5 and see tif there is a differance

What rom do you use also? I think that might play a part in data speeds.

I'm on XT and a parallel imported phone and GPS is very quick, we are talking seconds and a good lock as well much better than my captivate.

Try here for KE7 modem

Better yet have a look at the file and understand what it is doing then make the changes yourself.

I;ve saved a gps.conf so i can copy it over the top when ever I do a rom flash.

Haha I'm too lazy to read stuff, I just found the NZ GPS zip and flashed that through CWM. I'd really like to find the optimal rom/modem/kernel combo for my preferences + Telecom XT network.

what are you running now Lokhor.

I've been on Darky's for a while, also had a captivate which had crap GPS and never improved. I like Darky's pretty simple and stable and not flashy at all. I read their threads and only flash new Rom after seeing if there are any issues so maybe I'm a bit conservative but very happy with the SGS2 and its performance.

Here is a note I made for myself after noticing GPS was not a quick as it should be when using roms from other regions.

Changes to enable much faster gps data lookup for our region.
The gps.conf file needs to look like this for NZ.

NTP_SERVER=nz.pool.ntp.org
XTRA_SERVER_1=http://xtra1.gpsonextra.net/
xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_2=http://xtra2.gpsonextra.net/
xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_3=http://xtra3.gpsonextra.net/
xtra.bin
SUPL_HOST=supl.google.com
SUPL_PORT=7276

Only the first line will usually look different so make it like above.

Using Root Explorer:
Browse to /system/etc/, push Mount R/W button, then long press gps.conf and select Open in Text Editor.
Edit the file as mentioned shown above, then save, press Mount R/O button, exit Root Explorer and reboot phone.

There is an app call Fast Fix which basically does just this.

Regards,
John.
