My next question is, can I find the CWM backup using Root Explorer, and copy it somewhere so I can view it from my PC and copy it right off the phone (or at least to the external sdcard)

For me at least the backup was stored on the internal sdcard under Clockworkmod\backup. You can copy it using root explorer or just plug in the usb and grab it off in windows. I got a copys on my sdcard and HDD.

Next question - just reading the pre-requisites for Doc Kalpik, and it talks about having the 2e recovery. . . .I've read the faq, but I'm still not too sure what this is?

I'm pretty sure you've got it. If I recall you're still on Eclair. Eclair has it as standard. If you use the 3 button method to go to recovery (volume UP) you'll see the words 2e in the top line on the screen. You need this in order to accept an update.zip file (it's to do with how zip files are signed as I understand).

Once you're in recovery, if just to check if it's got 2e, then just select reboot phone (first option in the list) and it will boot back up.

I'm pretty sure you've got it. If I recall you're still on Eclair. Eclair has it as standard. Just culling out some of the "old stuff".

I'm on v8, but the latest v8 has ironed out a few bugs so I'd say go for that.

You'll get some colour with Froyo! If that hurts your eyes, then don't upgrade :P There's a couple of things that have changed in the menu, can't remember what now, but I think the Wireless bit is a little different to Eclair, or was it how to get to Development for debugging mode? Hmmm.

If you find you can't find something where it once was, just give us a yoddle. I wasn't on Eclair long before going to an early version of Froyo so I can't remember what Eclair was like.

Oh, the power options with Froyo include the ability to disable/enable Data. If you don't use something like Extended Controls that's quite a handy way to turn on/off mobile data.

One last thing. Take note of your IMEI number. Don't tell anyone what it is, but after you've flashed a Doc rom (or any Rom), make sure the IMEI has remained in tact. It's rare for it to change, and if it does, that's where you thank your luck stars you've got a copy of the /efs - becuase that's where your IMEI files are.

One last thing [rolls eyes], women never have "one last thing". I suggest you also get APN Backup from the market. It's free. Just use it to take a backup - which will save you having to manually type in all the APN stuff if it gets wiped during the flashing of a new ROM. Having said that, I've not had to use the restore between the Doc roms I've flashed.

ADJP5 is the most recent base Froyo Rom. It doesn't seem any different to me.

It takes a bit to read through all the details Doc has on the first few posts, but this is buried in amongst it:

Neets: My dear husband hasn't mentioned any problem with me yakking on the phone.? He now tells me there's been a problem when it's not been convenient for him to talk at work (ahhh, gotta love him!).

I've also called numerous times using a Plantronics Discovery Bluetooth headset and again, quality has been really good.

Like R2D2 (hi - where have you been hiding?) said, no reports I've seen about the quality of voice being a problem, or sub standard.

Mostly in the GPS theads, as it happens, so I'm guessing you haven't visited them in a bit? Hope you're enjoying your new ROM. I'm hoping we'll get 2.3 soon and we'll see what Doc and the boys can do with that. So I prolly won't update my current ROM until then. Or until somebody (such as you) waxes lyrical about some major fix to a problem I don't know I have yet, in which case I'll dump 7.5 like a hot spud and dabble once again in the black arts. :D

I really had no reason to move off V6 to V8 but I thought the battery might have been better. V8 has practically no battery drain when it's idol.

Since powering to full last night at 9:45, my battery is showing 67%. So since this morning (which dropped quickly when I was reading XDA in bed) it's hardly been used.

I still think it drains quickly when you do use the phone as more than a paperweight ;-)

I don't have anything I consider to be a problem with the phone, other than Handcent not audibly telling me I've got a SMS. I still can't figure out why it's not working, despite a "test" of the notification working. If you've got the answer to that I'd love to hear it. It used to work just fine.

I should have explained better. It's not while driving. I'm at home, the phone sitting next to me. If I didn't see the text pop up on the screen I'd have no indication I had a text message. The sound notification doesn't play.

However, I didn't have the driving setting activated (like you described) so I've ticked that now. And here's my noob question. How does the phone know when I'm driving. I don't put it into a car charger or mount.

I have Tasker set to read text sender names and text bodies while I'm driving, it even pauses music playback to do it and then resumes once done! (it knows I'm driving because the contexts are power and headset plugged in).

Weird. I wrote a reply and hit the submit button and the reply simply vanished. Also, the Bold, Italic, Underline and so on buttons in the post reply page have disappeared, and html mark-up is still visible. Something ain't right. Maybe Firefox acting up?

Anyway, here's the reply again. Paraphrased.

Driving mode is a misnomer - it's somebody's 'clever' marketspeak for audio notification. The only problem is that it's prolly overkill for you since it also announces calls, and reads txts I believe (I don't use it). Could be very annoying...

I use a solution that adds a red dot to your home screen messaging icons with a number representing the messages you have yet to read. I know that's not what you asked for but since it's the only other solution I can think of, I offer it anyway. If you're interested, let me know and I'll tell you what the (free) app's called.

I took the plunge last night and upgraded to ADJP5. . . . .

Wow. . . . coming from JH1 it's like a different phone; even with the Voodoo lagfix on Eclair it still seemed jerky in comparison to to how silky-smooth and responsive it is now.

GPS seems to be slightly improved, as does web-browsing.

Eclair + VLF = dragster (raw power, great on straights)
JP5 = Ferrari (Silky smooth acceleration out of the corners)

I'm a happy little Nofam :=)

One other question occurred; back int eh day I seem to remember someone (NZTechFreak maybe?) mentioning a patch to improve the sound quality. . . . .I'm going to be replacing the head unit in my car with something that can take an aux. input, so the quality is fairly important (not that it's bad now!).

Just by-the-by, in terms of a good music player, I've been using 3 quote a bit lately, and have just discovered PowerAMP - has anyone else had a dabble with this?

Right, so if there's no way to tell you're driving, then every text message would be read out. Hope no one sends a hot steamy message ;-) Nah, not likely!

I have the phone set to show the number of text messages not read, but since I have it also configured to Pop up when a text message arrives I don't see this. The indicator is no more helpful than spotting the pop up :) but it was a good thought!

I knew NZtechfreak would have a solution from Tasker :-D

I'm sticking to the 7.6.2 ROM at the moment. Trying out the JPM Modem to see if it provides better battery life. So far no improvement though. Today I'm at 66% after 12h48m with 37m of screen time and about 35 minutes of music while driving to work.
