Umm, no that's not automatically correct. IF you don't NEED 6GB your phone will NOT be faster because of it.

Bigger processor == Faster

More memory == more programs that can run at the same time.

Well yes and no.
More ram would allow more apps to run in background and be called upon quicker when requested. Would also allow you to return to the last working condition the app was left in when last used. This is quite important as you dont have to wait for the app to load or run through a process which may have already been started but lost through memory management.
This is one of the reasons the exynos was faster than the snapdragon in the s7.
Battery however is less effecient with more free running memory but the benefits outweigh the battery deficits.

A faster processor would and has lowered the effect that larger memory has on multitasking between apps. Sort of like how windows works, all programs load to ram and exit ram on users request. Over time if mobile processors get much better, system could operate this way. Or it may decide to have large memory and have all apps preloaded all the time. Or just stay where it is.

I think you will find 6gb will be the fine line between all that is needed and any more is just waste.

Is there any evidence to support the fact that 4GB isn't sufficient?

If you know anything about computers its easy to understand, its not that 4gb isnt sufficient. But there is a benefit to more.
You could say 1gb is enough, most apps or games wont use more than 1gb. So we should use 1gb ?

As soon as you open more apps that require memory, it will shuffle out the old memory in order selected by the android memory management system. Once you go back to your original app you were working on, a game for example. It might have to reload the game entirely (that game loading screen) because other apps requested access to the space it was occupying in the ram partition.

So more memory allows the ability for more apps to stay active in memory for future access without reload.

Yeah with 20 years in IT, I think I understand how computers work just fine thanks :)

If you put 32GB memory into a computer that works optimally with 8, you are wasting your money.

I contest the conclusion that a 6GB Note would be WAY faster than a 4GB one :)

Counterpoint. When I had 16G my computer was speedy fast. Now I have the same PC with 32G and there's no discernible difference to speed, apps opening, large multilayer Photoshop files, anything.

The law of diminishing returns applies to RAM.

The law of diminishing returns would be different in windows, its memory management is different. It does not shuffle out running programs to make room for more recent ones. It will use shared memory from the hard drive.
All running applications will be kept open and running.
The returns in computers would fall off when memory is kept high enough that it does not access this shared memory as often. This is of course excluding the variables of memory speed and latency.
Depending on how android take their memory management system, the rolloff could be when memory size is more than can be saturated by the average ammount of apps used in a phone. At its current state thats what it is. Or they might shift their memory management where they depend highly on processor speed to reduce app loading times and so the benefits of more memory would fall off a lot sooner. This is possible as it may be more effecient on the battery.

If you are already on an VF open term plan can you still get the Note 7 for $1299 without buying a new open term plan?

Do whatever you want to do man.

I'd take the 6GB RAM version if it were available simply for future proofing. I tend to keep my devices for the long haul. Currently using a note 2 which came with a groundbreaking 2GB RAM, at the time double what everything else came with.

Yea i mean no offence ;)
Yes of course as pointed out the point of diminished returns is true, but as my previous point it all depends.
Id say 6gb comes close to that limit, but as you say it may not be huge, more minor.

Sorry, my response was a little prickly when I re-read it. I apologise.

They will no doubt test the living snot out of this thing to see if it makes a difference, but I'll bet $10 paid to a charity of your choosing, that the results are so minimal as to not be relevant or have a detrimental effect in some other way.

Awesome. My order is apparently made, but because it's retail they have no idea how many, what colour or when stock will arrive in store.

There is a small chance therefore, that I may miss out on a phone! If that happens I will be very unhappy, but here's hoping.

One of the retail store managers I spoke to told me they hadn't had a single pre-order, and that every single bit of feedback had been about how terrible the price was and how people weren't going to consider

paying that price.

Fingers crossed.
