There is a big difference between community effort,  and what the manufacturers must roll out and have to guarantee to be usable, safe to upgrade to (without bricking) and fulfil their obligations to the telcos with regards to branding, locking, custom UIs and stability on their networks.  In effect they have to develop and test 10s of variations on the same version of Android in many cases.  This takes time.

To a certain extent that is true, but given the X5 is largely unbranded and unmodified it shouldn't an as issue to provide an update relatively quickly (its the OEMs own damn fault if their intrusive custom UIs are causing them problems down the track after all).

The bricking thing is definitely not an issue (or at least shouldn't be) its impossible to brick a phone by flashing a ROM if you leave the SPL and radio alone.

An unbranded rom with with no UI will certainly speed up the development process.  However, network certification by the telcos is often the thing that holds it up.  This shouldn't be so much of a problem for 2Degrees though as Huawei have built their infrastructure.  However they may need to get approval from Vodafone, as 2Degrees piggyback on their network in poor coverage areas.

I ran into an issue with a series of our company Nokia S60 phones which was fixed in a firmware update.  The update was available in other regions but not for NZ through Nokia Software Updater.  After calling Nokia on several occasions to see what the hold up was, their response was that as Vodafone were the official supplier of these phones in NZ it would be their call as to when the update became available.  They had submitted an updated branded firmware to VFNZ, but 4 months down the track were still awaiting VFs approval.  I called VF and found that the issue was that they hadn't got around to testing it, and the process usually takes a month or so.

Well I bought one.  Sylvia Park now has a display model so I had a tinker with that before laying down the $$

  First impressions:

1)  It feels solid, but not heavy.  The build quality is very high and everything fits together firmly with no obvious flexing and creaking.
2)  The screen is very bright and sharp. Not the best one out there in terms of the contrast, but still very good.  The blacks do appear a tiny bit grey.  Not a big issue considering the price.
3)  The battery does appear to heat up more than most phones I have owned when charging.  The battery temp showed around 45C, and it was certainly noticeable.  Huawei is a member of the group of phone manufacturers which signed up to the agreement designating the micro-usb plug as being a universal charging standard, so no surprises what the plug on the bottom is.
4)  The reception on it isn't quite as good as my Nokia E66, however that phone was exceptional.
5)  GPS locks on very quickly.
6)  It feels like a $550 phone.  Not quite as stylish as the top end offerings from HTC, Samsung or Motorola, but not as

It does have Japanese language support built in, so the wife is happy.  We may well be buying another one.

Someone who actually has the phone should know as it would contain a warranty card or something similar.

I am not going to rush in this time for that price.

I bought an IDEOS U8015 at $379 one month before Christmas and was pretty happy with the performance. No long later, the price started drop to $299, $279, even $234 for promotion at DSE. There was a pain in my heart that is not strong enough now to overcome another one.

It's better to wait and see.

every phone gets discounted after time, its to be expected. You never know how long your going to have to wait though, im guessing it will be a few months at least before you see any discounts on this. Its a new model, not just to NZ but the world, im surprised we have it so soon!

Pricing is really important for carriers at the moment with so many devices about the flood the market.

I can't help thinking that if it had come in under the magic $500 price point it would have looked a whole lot more attractive.

On my 'mid range phone to watch' list at the moment is the Samsung Galaxy Ace - it's got a 3.5" screen at lower res than the ideos but the rest of the specs look good - if it hits the right price point it could be a good device.

To compete it would need to come in at a similar price to the LG P500 as it has similar specs (slightly higher clocked cpu). I have doubts as to whether or not this will happen.

On a side note do you think the Huawei X3 will be coming to NZ?
Engadget has a hands on video
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/18/huawei-ideos-x3-hands-on-video/
It looks like it will compete with the P500 and perhaps replace the U8150 Ideos

12 Months.  Although I see in Finland it is 24 months.

Just thinking out loud but does the Consumer Guarantees Act cover beyond the Manufacturer warranty?
