Hey wazz, any chance you could try out a WiiMote with your SGS on CyanogenMod ROM? That is one of the final things that would make the SGS as perfect for me as it can be...

Maps Nav will download its maps for any route planned, via wifi if available, or 3G if not. You need 3G enabled to update Maps's route if you detour from the 'recommended' route, and/or if the route is a long one. The app doesn't appear to be coded in a way that you can use the downloaded tiles in any other manner than the route planned, so caching the map tiles, even if it were possible, won't mean anything to the software. Each time you plan a route, Maps will download those tiles, whether or not you've saved them on your system.

To use cached maps, the app itself would need to be re-written, it seems, and there has been no word from Google that they intend to do that.

The voice is already stored on the phone - (Pico text to speech) - which you find under Text-to-speech in Settings. The Maps app calls the TTS API which provides the synthesised speech via an xml file containing the waypoint data. Maps Nav 'reads' the file and the TTS engine interprets it.

That was a bit long-winded (really Artoo... long-winded you say? Quel surprise...) but I couldn't think of a brief way to explain how it works. So apologies for going on. I'll STFU now.

Having said that you can try Navigon which does have all the maps stored offline (but doesn't support TTS without paying for it as an extra):

Anyone know if the SGS port of CyanogenMod is completely independent of the Samsung Froyo builds of Android?

Does it provide it's own root filesystem ? or is it built over Samsung's Android implementation and hence still uses RFS in some aspects?

A couple questions about the GPS. What is the "best" app to use and how do I set it up? Currently using the Google Maps with brut, but would prefer a full fledged GPS with maps installed locally rather than relying on caching and 3g.

I installed Aura from Sygic last night but couldn't find the NZ Maps in the Aura Downloader. Can I buy the maps from a seperate site to use with that program or does it have to come all as one?

Would upgrading to 2.2 make this search any easier?

The Android Market hasn't been terribly helpful in finding a decent app. A lot of junk/shovelware getting in the way of stuff I want.

Sygic make mobile maps 10 as well, and that appears to support new zealand, but I can't find anywhere to buy/download that for the galaxy s either. On the Sygic website it just wants me to download Aura. But there are youtube videos running mobile maps 10. Confused.

How do I get that? I saw everyone talking about it in another thread. Is Froyo necessary?

You have to spoof your region to see it. Download MarketEnabler app (You might have to google it and side load it - I had to). Use the custom tab to set the region code to 50502. Then fire up the market app and seach for Navigon. Install while connected to wifi as the app will immediately download maps as soon as it runs.

muzzholt: @ Edge - I used kies registry patcher 1.6.0.0.
Just select TNZ (telecom nz) from the drop down box and proceed with the patch.
It appears to me that for some reson kies doesn't recognise the phone as being from nz and the patch fixes that problem. As mentioned earlier the version of froyo offered for upgrade after this in kies is the genuine telecom nz version with telecom splash screen and all the APN data loaded etc.

Thanks Muzz - will try it as soon as I can. Have downloaded 1.6.0.0 but still having troubles getting any regular connection via Kies, so have to get that sorted first!

Thanks again Muzz - finally got around to having a crack today and it worked absolutely fine. Took around 15 minutes to complete but no hiccups at all. Have done hard reset as you suggested and am about to start putting things back to the way they were (apps, layout etc). Only issue so far is I have been unable to get sync with work Exchange server working again, but have our IT guys looking at it and I'm sure it won't be an issue. Looking nice so far, although more testing to come.

In general the steps out lined are the process. I've never put my phone into debugging mode, but doing so would allow you to access the phone using adb. If something went wrong and your phone wouldn't boot up, then the phone in debugging mode means you'd still be able to use adb and you can use that to boot your phone.

What isn't described here is that need to have the drivers install. If you've already had your phone connected to your computer using the USB then the drivers are no doubt already installed.

In the image, the ID:COM field will show up (in yellow) with a COM number. That's when you know your phone has been seen by Odin, and when you know clicking the START button will do something to the phone.

In summary, you can put your phone into debugging mode, but do it before step 2.

The rest of the steps are exactly what I've done in the past using Odin to change to Froyo.

One other the thing, you're using a Multi CSC here. I wonder if you can find the official CSC for your phone. I had a multi CSC and it changed the product code of the phone.

I also recall others saying some CSC can affect frequency - I could be talking rubbish here. But when I flashed back to an offical firmware I included the OPS (Optus) CSC. The file is in /system/csc./[country folder] but then you end up with another system folder with other files and the CSC you flash is a single file (which obviously contains all this other stuff). Not sure where you get the *one* file that contains all the CSC stuff.

during the upgrade process there is a part that backs up your contacts to the Samsung server and it will save them for 2 years, what I want to know is how do I get to this back up as I would like to use it to restore my contacts.
After the upgrade to 2.2 I lost everything and had to re-download all my apps etc and I got most of my contacts back from exchange but some where not corporate contacts so they where not on there.

(have also lost all my levels on games I had played but guess that is not something I can get back

)

So can anyone shed some light? have tried Google but did not find anything useful.

I think Odin scares people, but I actually found it significantly quicker to use than Kies to upgrade. 2 minutes vs. 15 minutes.

There's plenty of YouTube videos showing how to use Odin too, which helps for those of us who like to see rather than just read about it.

Odin is a very simple piece of software. Glad you found the process easy too.

Do I need to add APNs and stuff now? Seeing I've got no 3g I guess that's a yes. I tried adding them and they never appeared. How do I fix this?
