This is probably a bit of a dumb question but as I am soon to have two android devices when I get the nexus tablet, are the apps I have already purchased for use on my phone, locked to that device or one device at a time, or can I have them across multiple devices?

A lot depends on the individual app maker. As with PC software, some allow multiple installations on one licence, but I suspect that most don't. Also, some, like Swift Key X (my keyboard of choice) have different versions for phone and tablet, requiring separate purchases.

I've got the same paid for apps installed on my ASUS EEE Transformer, my Galaxy S2 and my Galaxy S3.  I've not come across one yet that hasn't recognised that I've paid for the app and allowed me to install on a further devices.

That doesn't mean some apps only allow for a single install, but I haven't come across it in my experience yet.

The play store doesn't have the option to limit how many devices an app can be installed on, so you'll be able to install all apps you've already paid for on the nexus 7, unless the developer has released a separate version for tablets, or are using their own license server.

Elpie:
stuartjmz: I just answered my own question - I forgot I had time left on my month's sub to Overplay. I got into the full Play Store no problem, saw an ad urging me to download the movies and tv app, then saw this:

Google Play

The message changes too, depending on where you access the store from, then changes again if you use a credit card issued in another country.

If you buy an Australian phone or Nexus 7 the message you get says the item cannot be installed in your country. If you use an Australian IP, the message then pops up if you try to use a NZ credit card.

My Samsung Galaxy S2 was bought in Australia. Google allowed me to get free books on it but stopped me anytime I wanted to buy any. Conversely, I was able to install Google Books on my NZ phone and download free books while I was in Australia but cannot access them now that I am back in NZ. The whole thing is plain stupid.

Well I got a bit further than that. My tablet (Motorola Xoom) and phone (Galaxy Nexus) both have the app pre-installed. The Xoom is because it's from the US and it came with the app already installed and when it was updated to ICS, that didn't change. The GN because, while it was not bought in the US, I flashed the US build.

I used a VPN to rent a movie on the web site which worked fine. When I opened the app I could see the movie there. But even on a VPN, as soon as I tried to play it, I received the message that the content is not available in your country. That is pretty puzzling given they let me buy it so must have checked that the country was fine then, but won't let me watch it. Oh well - it was only a $1.99(US) rental.

I've installed paid apps on close to a dozen different devices, with various combos of different firmwares etc. The only limitations you're likely to deal with is if apps aren't compatible with the device itself and/or the resolution, which isn't that uncommon and is a nuisance.

Getting the N7 to the same level of capability as other devices will just be a case of sideloading some other versions of apps, but you're still going to have to jump through hoops to be able to download anything other than apps from the Play store.

We're too small a market for them to give much priority, the devices being sold here are going to be essentially grey-market imports so are unlikely to be supported by Google themselves beyond the fact they've got Android on them. If you want music/movies/books, then you'll probably be getting them via other sources.

That said, I'm listening to my Google music library on my phone right now, had to set it up via a US-based VPN, and I still can't buy things, but at least I've got all my personal library uploaded ok.

+1 except I am also able to buy music (not that I have bought much). What is interesting is that music bought can be listened to even without a VPN. But the video I rented cannot even be viewed over the VPN

Some of the reviews I have read have mentioned the Nexus 7 comes preloaded with one of the Transformers movies and some one-off issues of several magazines.  It will be interesting to see if any of that appears on the NZ versions.

What's more puzzling is why one would want too in the first place.  I am not convinced about consuming media via Amazon, Apple and Google Play though it is where everyone seems to be heading.  Am I just old fashioned?

Why rent a movie for $1.99US (2.56NZD) to watch (once? or multiple times?) currently not only jumping through hoops to get it, but lets ignore that, but just the cost add NZ data rates say 1-2Gig at $3 per gig that's $6 just to watch a movie on a very small screen.  What is wrong with the old fashioned DVD store old movies $1, new releases $2.50, and if one likes it, keep a ****, that one can watch any time on anything.

Music: what is wrong with either the old fashion library $2 CD rental or recording internet radio (have commercial paid for SW that will search and record specific songs or artist), or for ebooks there is usenet and the like.

Had a Kindle for 2 years and Amazon have not even got a $1.99 out of me!

Interested to know in passing what movie it was, and if it has already been released on DVD?

Whats wrong is that you have to leave your house... and that may mean moving outside the Play-store/itunes bubble (and giving your money to some local business thats scratching to stay viable).

It's just soo last century to go down to a 'local' store when you can send your coin to the other side of the globe with the swipe of a finger from your sofa.

As a side note, the latest version of Stickmount allows reading directly off a usb drive mounted via a OTG cable.. No need to copy the files to the device to be able to play them.. If only they could get MHL working i would be all over this, however i believe thats a hardware limitation not software.

I checked today with Noel Leemings, where we usually get b2b prices and there is not much margin for the N7. So I doubt we will be seeing a little price war as we have been during the S3 launch.

To answer your questions.

It was done as an experiment to see if I could access US content.

Broadband charges are not relevant since I pay for a monthly cap I rarely reach.

Video stores or the library do not permit impulse rentals.

The movie was The Notebook which my daughter wanted to watch right there and then.

I'm looking forward to your review! Can I ask you to do a GPS comparison between it and what ever phone you have now?
