meeekael: Do I need to add APNs and stuff now? Seeing I've got no 3g I guess that's a yes. I tried adding them and they never appeared. How do I fix this?

Speaking of upgrading, what is the purpose of backing up the efs folder and at what times is the data required from this folder?

Does it need to be copied and pasted into the efs again after every rom upgrade? eg stock 2.1 to a custom 2.2.

You back up /efs because it stores your IMEI number, which is basically just a unique number assigned to your phone. It can change (although rarely) when you flash a rom. If it does change you can have issues, in which case you'd restore it using your backup.

Other than that though you don't need to worry about it, as long as its backed up.

I made an earlier post about having issues with MMS on XT. This is now resolved and posted here about it:

Anyone upgraded Swype, or know how it's tied to OS version, hardware or anything else?

Info on the net's inconclusive, some saying it's not possible, others saying they've done it. I've got a Captivate and still running 2.1 (still hoping for an official Froyo but can't even connect to Kies at the moment), so wouldn't want to find an update for standard i9000 mucked things up.

As an aside, does a full backup with Rom Backup save everything including Swype, /efs etc? I.e. A complete, safe backup of the phone software? So even if I mucked up Swype I could just go back to a recent backup and be up and running again.

You should be able to backup Swype using Titanium Backup.

Hello again.

Started to get into the thick of it now and having to remember my linux stuff from when I was mucking around with it at school. Issues I've had...

SMS not vibrating.
Had a similar problem on 2.1 but the fix was easy as adjusting the notification volume. Upon upgrading to 2.2 the problem was back with avengeance and looked like it was there to stay. Google to the rescue and random work around number one...I installed an app called Missed Reminder and set the timing to 1 second with no repetition. Tada now it vibrates fine, even though it didn't fix the problem, it did "fix" the problem haha.

Application not Installed error.
Strange problem, only affected labyrinth lite and angry birds for whatever reason. I think it was something to do with my device ID changing upon upgrade or something like that. Trawled the internet for a couple hours tonight and had to get terminal to delete a file or unmount the internal sd(a feature no longer done by froyo, for whatever reason). So just used my small amount of linux-ness to umount /sdcard, then installed the apps fine. Couldn't mount it back though, had to restart, which mounted it fine on restart.

What would the command have been if I wanted to mount it without a restart? mount /sdcard /mnt/internal_sd?

Funny, trying to replicate the unmounting now and it wont work. Says the device is busy. Strange. Hope the problem doesn't come back haha.

Right...

Finally took the plunge and flashed to Froyo 2.2 for my Captivate! Blazing quick!

ROM in question is MikeyMike's "Assonance 2.0" with the following main features:

I9000 based ROM

I9000UGJK3 Based
I9000UGJK3 Modem with 850 3G so works on XT. Full HSUPA enabled.. Take that AT&T!
SetiroN's Kernel 1.4.2 1280 MHz
Working Swype

Installed via Clockwork so a very painless procedure. Still yet to really study Odin but I'm sure it will be needed at some point in the future.

battery was full at 99% at 6am, by 9.30 am it gone to 89% , i do live in weak reception area (which is really sad considering only live 10m drive from hamilton/chartwell sq) i am on 3g all the time get more reception that way ....is it just normal , or is there battery drain fault sum-where????

tested aura maps works good..... 5m getting gps lock not so good :(

3g does use more power than gsm
google android calibrate battery
disable or decrease email / phone synch frequency
screen brightness = auto or low
uninstall unused widgets

I got fed up with waiting for what will no doubt be vodafone emblazoned official firmware, so I'm now running Darkyy's Legendary Steel Edition v1.4 with an all JFS file system.

I'm not 100% convinced with the theme due to some of the ambiguousness (like having transparent buttons for disabled and slightly less transparent for enabled.

I left the phone on overnight with flightmode enabled and my alarm set and it didn't report any battery usage this morning. Battery does seem to go quickly when the phone is in use but I'm not sure at this point if its any worse than what it was with Eclair. The phone is certainly responsive.

Initial observations after last night's flash to Froyo 2.2.

Took phone off the charger at 7am.. and as of right now still 17%. Excellent battery life and far better than what it was with stock. Today's usage:

About 2 hours of listening to mp3s while at work.
Watched several video clips on the phone. One of which was a 2GB 720p Xvid file (about 15 minutes of it).
Took a few 2 minute video clips on camcorder in 480p and 720p quality. Took several pics.
Ran Google maps/GPS on the way to and from work. Approximately 20 minutes in total.
Downloaded several applications via Marketplace via wifi and 3G.
Around 1 hour's web browsing including NBA.com and watching some of the flash videos there. "top plays of the week" :-)
Several calls/texts made and received.
3G enabled for the whole day unless the wifi was used.

Other observations:
No FC's yet anywhere.
Plays 720p Xvid and mkv files perfectly
Gallery app is blazingly fast. I thought navigating the Gallery in 2.1 was quick, but the 2.2 speed leaves it in the dust. A very pleasant surprise!
GPS seems to be accurate now and locks within about 30 seconds.. better than stock, hardly ever locked.
HSUPA now unlocked. Previously maxing around 3000 kbs down and 300 up on the AT&T crippled firmware. Speed tests in various parts of Hamilton hitting around 5 Mb/s down and 1.7 Mb/s, with maxes of 6500 Mb/s down and 2 Mb/s up achieved today.

Might try my bluetooth headset later today and see how that performs.

With the lack of a forthcoming 2.2 update from AT&T, I decided to make the jump to a custom 2.2 ROM and I am really glad I did :-) The Captivate unfortunately hasnt had the same level of custom rom development as it's brother the I9000. This is due to the difficulty in successfully porting the I9000 kernels/modems to the Captivate as well as the lack of suitable I9000 3G 850 modems. Many 3G 850 modems when flashed to a Captivate only allow data and no voice, or data and very bad voice, as well as various incompatibilities.

Got sick of reading, and decided to flash. No regrets :-) Pays to read read read... and ask questions on GeekZone too :-)
