I have VoLTE on Vodafone, 5G is selected in settings, but it is showing LTE rather than 5G at the top of the screen. Has anyone else gotten 5G working with Vodafone on the Pixel 8?

I don't seem to be getting VoLTE or 5G on Skinny(using P8 Pro). Did i miss enabling something? Previously had a non 5g phone when using the skinny sim.

have you ever had volte or 5G on your sim with other phones?

see my post above

Ahh thanks Farcus, I had VoLTE on my previous phone but didn't have 5G on it. I guess I may need to contact Skinny to have it enabled.

Volte = voice over 4g
Nothing to do with 5g. Did 5g work previously in the area you are testing

I've not had a 5G phone before. When I turn off WiFi and turn on mobile data I expected to see a 5G symbol at the top of the screen, but I see LTE instead. I assume VoLTE can work over 5G.

I checked the Vodafone map and I'm not in a 5G area, which is probably why. I'll be in a 5G area Monday, I'll have a look then. If it doesn't work then I'll call Vodafone and see what they say.

You will only see 5G on the screen when the phone has an actual 5G connection not simply because you have set 5G as the prefeered connection type

Yeah I know, same as how 2G / 3G / LTE works. I just didn't realise I wasn't in a 5G area. It's at cell sites near me, just not the ones closest.

Tried contacting Skinny, unfortunately was useless. They kept referring me to the coverage map and advised I should change my network type to 5G (all things I'd done previous to contacting them)

Netmonster shows LTE working fine apparently, I just don't see a little LTE symbol in the top right, so I assumed it meant it wasn't active.

Anyone else on Skinny managed to get 5G?

Pixel 8 speed tests on Vodafone. Both from inside a car.

  • 5G in Newtown, Wellington 66Mbps down, 9Mbps up.
  • LTE in another inner Wellington suburb, 67Mbps down 43Mbps up.

I've noticed this with some areas of 5G the speeds vary, I guess it depends if you're connected to a true 5G signal or something like 4.5ishG

2degrees in Newtown is on the slower speed test scale 50-80 Mbs. Whereas Customhouse Quay in Wellington I was getting 300+ Mbs.

pretty sure you don't get a volte icon on  pixel phones - it just says 4G during the call

I'm on skinny with a Pixel 6a and have 5G.
I did need to get a Spark rep on here to enable it for me though.

check in your phone settings . . .
*#*#4636#*#*
Phone info . . .

what does "NR State (NSA)" show (when you are in a known 5G area)?

Previously the NSA was showing as "Disconnected".

I managed to get it enabled - the Skinny weekend Chat support were absolutely dense. One quick 5 min call to the Skinny Customer support on Monday, got a staff member who immediately recognised the problem after I stated it would need to be manually enabled and then proceeded to provision it for my phone. I now get 5G :)

Thanks for your help farcus!
