NoLED now puts the time on the 'sleeping' screen when a message arrives. Cool.

No, and not sure my fairly basic taste buds could cope with going to something so different. But I do like Balsamic Vinegar - delish, Chocolat in Governors Bay I think has one of their chocolates with balsamic vinegar, another with chilli and there's another I thought was rather "interesting" (some herb?) but not game to waste my money in case I screwed my nose up. I'm a meat and 3 veg girl (hold the veg - unless it's potatos, corn, peas, cauliflower or carrots).

O/T (some more). I finally installed Angry Birds Saturday night. I can see how it's a time waster. But I suck at that sort of things and then I get the pip when I can't get passed a stage that looks simple. You can tell I'm not much of a team player ;-)

Where did you track that rather obscure piece of info down? I'll have to find hubbys phone to see if I can receive/make txt messages and MMS. Titanium Backup is still doing it's thing.

Ah got it, I missed the proxy ip address then restart and BAM it worked

Some obscure telecoms site that came up in search for set message center (yank spelling). In it was a reference to sms, and in the post was a reply from somebody who evidently knows about such stuff. Now that the numeric string is known, it should be a doddle to find it again. But since it's already here, and the mods are unlikely to lose it, it's all kinda moot now.

I hope it helps others who have this issue. Maybe DrD can add it to the knowledge base.

New question.

I can't connect the phone to the computer and MTP is still on there.

I also can't see my external SD card. When I tried to take a backup of my homescreen settings for LP it said something about not finding an external SD card.

Can anyone remember what you need to do to get the external SD card to be recognised? I can see it in root explorer but when I went to select a photo off my external SD it says "not external SD card detected".

I had my external SD card OUT while flashing via Odin so I can't see how it's corrupted. I've also used it to copy a file to it from my computer (since the computer doesn't see the phone) and then used Root Explorer to move the file from External to Internal SD card.

At a bit of a loss over this one [scratches head] Bed time. Will ponder on it.

kiwijunglist: @Brendon, first step, update via kies to froyo.

Then decide what you want.

If you want custom rom then goto custom rom, suggest doc's rom, clear instructions are on xda.

If you use custom rom, then use the lagfix built into the custom rom, details in that thread.
The instructions advice you to use chainfire pre doc's (atleast they did when i went to custom rom, probably still the case)

If you want stock rom with lagfix then install vodoo

I can't remember if voodoo will add 3br (aka 2e) and root / su / busybox, if you want these it might be better to do chainfire first then do voodoo

Thanks for the help, I used your information and more off xda and flashed my phone to Darkys v5.2 last night - successfully. It seemed to have the mose fixes built in, and was getting some high praise on xda. It also had the simplest flashing instructions.

2.2.1 jpu iirc.

Anyway, thanks for the tips! It seems the info on xda is quite scattered, and a mish-mash of old and new techniques, exceptions etc. I'd make a new FAQ if I knew what I was doing lol!

Settings/Wireless and network/USB settings.

You should see -

* Samsung Kies
* Media player
* Mass storage
* Ask on connection

It defaulted on Kies for me and I had to tell it twice that I wanted it to be Mass storage. It seems to have stuck for now.

So I've done the 2.2.1 update from samfirmware...

It certainly makes the phone much snappier - But I've got issues with accessing the internet of 3g, and can't make a USB connection to transfer files and such.

It also fixed my lack of 3br, which is a bonus.

Yes.

More - they have NAND protection so you have to jump through hoops to break that too if you want full root access.

Ok a reboot has fixed the external SD card. Well I can select a picture from there now which I couldn't before. Though I still can't restore my LP backup
