Having root access allows you to set up ad blockers - could be why the app doesn't work. Why bother wasting bandwidth on a device that doesn't give them any ad revenue?

nzkc: Isnt this all a bit counter productive by TV3? They want our eyes on the screen so they can push adverts to us and get paid more. And the industry wonders why so many people torrent shows and movies!

But the companies they're buying content on insist that DRM be in place before they can offer solutions such as this app. They're only doing what they're being forced to do by the content owners.

I dont buy this myself. TV3 could make the adverts part of the stream so you have to watch them regardless of what ad blockers you run.

I dont doubt that happens. But as I said; "and the industry wonders why people turn to torrents". Having a rooted device doesn't mean you have, or even can, circumvent DRM. I'm sure it would allow you to circumvent some DRM that is in place, but it wouldn't be all. A crude example would be that a decryption key is embedded with the app - having a rooted device doesnt mean you can get to an unencrypted version of the stream.

Anyone who is that desperate to grab a permanent copy of a show on TV3 only needs a $50 tuner dongle plugged into their laptop - giving completely unencumbered recording in glorious 1080i.

As nzkc said, when the legal solutions are this silly, why are they surprised people turn to torrents instead? All they are accomplishing here is to irritate their userbase, cost themselves ad revenue, and make other solutions more attractive. Hardly a sensible business strategy?

Years ago when Windows vista came out some people made waves because HDMI and digital content used DRM technologies - at the end of day it didn't prevent anyone actually using a PC for much and pretty much everyone with HDMI today can play anything and no one is impacted by that DRM.

So this is why practically no PC's have HDMI in, we can't record from skyboxes, bluray players etc unless we pay astronomical prices for HDCP strippers?
Also you've apparently never battled with incompatibilities between sky decoders and TV's that refuse to correctly negotiate HDCP, and so forcibly degrade your picture quality.
To quote Ed Felten "The main practical effect of HDCP has been to create one more way in which your electronics could fail to work properly with your TV."

HDCP and DRM in general are inherently evil technologies designed to protect a copyright monopoly and an outdated outmoded business model for content creators. They greatly inconvenience legitimate users, and pretty much NEVER deter people who are determined to not pay for content. The world would be a much better place without them.
