Have been quite interested in the Meizu M6 Note since I saw it mentioned on PBtech Xmas catalog - although it appears to have only just made it to the shelves in the last day or two.

The price and specs look good - likewise the reviews.

Not sure how it will fare for OS updates - In fact as the android version is somewhat hidden behind the FlymeOS, its actually quite difficult to see that it is (I think) running Nougat.

I must temper my comment by stating that my wife has the Meizu 3s not the model mentioned by the OP.

Id say its easily the best value phone on the market.

SD625, so battery saver yet powerful enough for almost anything, unlike the known brand names who use a sd430 SOC for their budget phones. So no lagging and stuttering like the sd430 etc on the Moto G5.

4GB Ram

4000Mah battery fast charger, lasts most people 2 days easy.

Uses same camera sensor as HTC U11 ($1200 phone), of course its pics arent as good due to lenses, but their better than most budget phones.

Has already rolled out its Oreo update.

It looks pleasing to the eye.

For $230 landed (Global rom from well known international dealer) some people are hard to please. If you need band 28 I recommend PBtech at $369 with NZ warranty.

I have the G5s, it's a nice phone, the materials remind me of an HTC M8 I had for a while. I think if you can find a new/refurb Note 5 then you will enjoy that too, although, not sure how they are going with updates. When I bought the G5s, i'd spent some time looking at older mobiles, but decided that I was more likely to get recent software updates, the Note 5 would hardly get them when I had it. In saying that, the G5s (Dec '17) is behind my Sony X Compact (Feb '18) at the moment, despite being a year or so newer?

I wouldn't buy this phone (G5s) for the camera, I would buy it for the battery life, cost, build materials and software. I have read the dual camera on the Plus actually isn't great either, but up to you.

My use case for that phone is work, so calling, emails and spreadsheets, not gaming, generally I can't complain too much about it's ability to complete those tasks.

Im considering ex displays and extremely well protected used Note 5s for $350. The batteries are about $15-20 and easy enough to replace. The batteries I have looked at have good reviews and not fire starters haha. I will run a battery health test on it first of course. Note 5 has just had Oreo announced but if its a US carrier version could be problems as some carriers have said they wont be pushing updates. Of course in NZ most are unlocked outright phones so the update is straight from Samsung.

The G5S Plus is about $400 new and quite good value, unlike the g5 which is a sd430 soc its sd625, 3000mah, as you said, fairly average camera (but I dont buy phones for the camera), 3GB ram, 5.5" LCD 1080p etc. To be honest Id likely import the Meizu M6 note for $230 as I have no qualms in my head over ordering from AE, Ive done it so many times now and never been burnt. But you essentially kiss goodbye a long term warranty, anything DOA is obviously covered and Im sure they have warranty but ive never had to explore that before. Mainly for its battery life.

But Im really quite keen on a used Note 5 as its amazing what they can do and suits me as a designer quite nicely. There is even a Note 8 launcher to get the Note 8 updates haha, but outside the camera, they are minimal, the note 5 still has a reasonable camera.

Long term my next phone will be the Nokia Sirrocco (8), gorgeous stock android phone, Nokia really know how to build phones.

Then hopefully longer term MS Andromeda Continuum, but thats more watch this space at this point in time.

Here are the Moto, Note5 and Nokia side by side. A feature I did want was HDR10, but I can wait for that and a SAMOLED makes up for it. But try to get your hands on a XZ Premium, 4k HDR10 phone, go to youtube and search for 4k HDR channel and watch some of those videos on that phone, mind blowing.

Have a look at the Xiaomi Mi A1. Got one for a friend and was extremely impressed for the price, around $290 NZD

Downsides I can see are as follows though:

I doesn't have LTE Band 28 (I'm not sure if the Moto does though)

No quick charging

Not splash resistant

Moto G5 has band 28. I checked the specs before I ordered one for my wife, which should turn up Monday. Amazon took ages to get it ready for shipment, so they upgraded it to 3 day DHL shipment free.

Yep, its the same specs as the Meizu m6 note, except it doesnt have a quality camera sensor like the m6, its only 3080mah battery, its not quick charging and it costs $60 more.

PBTech import a lot of phones that are of poor quality. The Meizu M5 Note I am using now is from PBTech and it is terrible. It hasn't had an Android security update since January 2017. It has been completely abandoned in terms of any sort of software update. The battery life is terrible due to drain from Google Play Services, which aren't even installed by default. Meizu is not a good brand.

Even though its inferior and the Meizu has updates running? The moto is a good phone, but for actual performance the Meizu bests it with ease.

Re The Note 5, totally different concept phone hence not called the M5 Note. Most people knew it was just a Note 3 refresh. All brands have phones to avoid. Samsung dont role out fast updates and especially if you are talking low end. LG even worse, but I still like the V20 which hasnt had an update whilst the v30 has been out for a while and I like the Note 5 Sammy and its 2.5 years old.

You just have to do some homework.

Don't forget the Mi A1 is an Android one device. I got one for my wife (and used it for a few weeks while I was tinkering with my s7). With a bit of tinkering you can enable EIS and get Google can hdr+ working quite easily.

The certainty of regular security updates has become more and more important to me considering how much info is being put through these devices coupled with all the exploits that are being discovered.

Thoroughly impressed, she consistently gets 7hrs SOT. When I was using it, I'd only be charging it every 2nd day (the s7 barely lasts a day now). That was with all the same apps.
