Richms says the law doesn't apply to 2nd hand goods - but if Trademe are going to block a phone listing because the phone doesn't feature a NZ plug on the charger anybody selling an iPad with a US plug should also have their auction removed if they're going to follow their own rules.

Are you sure? I think all they have to do is supply an adaptor with the product so it's legal. That seems to be what the parallel importing shops do anyway

Half the adapters on there are illegal as well. Any of the light grey ones are, as the face of them is too small to prevent missinserion of a US or UK plug and the resulting contact with the other pin that will be live.

Hell, I have one here where you can misinsert a NZ plug into it with the earth into the live hole.

NO, I was told in no uncertain terms (after already buying 8 adapters to sell with phones) that I could not sell the chargers because they had a US plug - adapter or no adapter, they wouldn't let me list it. I had to get a properly fitted NZ charger before they let me relist... ooooo, but I'm not bitter about it, really, I'm not....

I just listed some things with

"No NZ capable charger supplied" and never had them pulled, no picture of a charger other than "to show what plug it needed to be"

They are all illegal anyway as they don't have insulated pins on the AS/NZS3112 plug which is required on any device sold in NZ and also required on an adapter for it to be legal also.

So TM are 'annoying' because they have to comply with NZ law?

Depending on TM's status (are they a member of the "appliance industry?") I didn't see anything at that link that obliged TM to interfere in transactions. That they choose to do so, to protect the buyer and enhance their reputation as a responsible auctioneer, might annoy some people.

The other thing that might annoy people, based on the information provided, is their selective enforcement of this rule.

So no, it doesn't appear to me that the annoyance arises from necessary compliance with legislation.

Used to be heaps of them, and also some tiny black 2 pin ones.

Forget the shethed pins, thats not a big deal, they have a damn hole in the pin that shreds the insides of outlets, and they are usually too thin to actually have any grip - particually in the crap 4/6 way powerstrips that are for some bizzare reason legal to sell.

I included a USB power adaptor which allows the phone's USB cable to plugged into it and charged that way. No need for the original adaptor at all. I did include it, too, though as it camewith it and I have no use for it.

I just didn't mention it in the auction and it wasn't part of the auction.

Thanks for explaining this. I had no issues for years but recently have bought two power bars that should have come with clamps to keep the power adaptors plugged into the sockets. They have no grip at all in the middle of 6 outlets...and they adaptors just fall out by the (slight) weight of the power cord.

...and this is supposed to be safe.

Makes you laugh.
