oops forgot to say my phone had heaps of chinese on it when i got it but the serial number was from germany t-mobile which got me thinking that they had removed the branding

@ 316productions, I called the mobile number on the website and spoke to Gordon. Email is useless as you get Eric, he can write well, but I don't think he's here in NZ. In any case, if you sleuth and go to the companies register and enter their GST number ,it will bring up two addresses. You'll need to go to the Mt Albert address to drop the phone off. It's behind a gated community so you will need to contact Gordon first otherwise you won't get to their office.

I spoke with Gordon today and he said he'd sent the phone off to their tech and that it would be back this week. So we'll see. (He's been pretty good so far).

Good luck on this. The stuff about the warranty not covering OS is BS. You should still be covered by the consumer guarantees act, especially if you've not rooted the phone, or installed dodgy apps. If you did what I did and merely tried to update you should be well within your rights to return the phone for repair or replacement (don't let him try and talk you out of that).

Deffo let us know how you get on, it would be nice to have a precedent to cite if and when other people send their phones back.

Initially I wasn't too bothered as the phone was doing everything I wanted but thinking about it I have a phone that won't upgrade to 2.2 and if I can't get 2.2 I presumably won't be able to progress beyond that either, so as much as I would miss it, I might have to send her back and get it sorted.

Hey, I got a Desire from eKing - exactly the same issue - auto upgrade fails and now in loop reboot mode. Eric said the same "2.2 no good on Desire" and then no action....

I also got an htc desire from eking and the update failed, and it now is locked in a "Force Close" and "Wait" loop. Once again, Eric says "2.2 no good for desire - need to downgrade". Eric is finding a solution.

I emailed HTC directly and got a swift response.... despite eKing shipping from Hong Kong, HTC told me my phone was manufactured in Germany...

Will try to ship my phone to Gordon I think...

You could try putting an alternate ROM on it. They work fine - including the Android v2.2 versions.

I believe there is a version of CyanogenMod for the desire and that's as good a system - usually better - than the stock ones.

Or try Modaco.com.....the site run by Paul O'Brien. He has put a huge amount of time an effort into providing excellent ROMs for the HTC Desire.

If your phone is faulty due to hardware, then absolutely return it. But if it just has messed up software....that is fixable and modaco.com have lots of people who can offer help to someone who needs it - provided you take the time to describe the problem accurately and make the effort to understand the advice rendered. I'd see it as a learning opportunity that ultimately frees you from relying on vendors who - as you have discovered - don't really provide the support you need and thought you had paid for.

I have HBOOT-0.83.0001.

Could I simply download another ROM and install?

If people simply fix things themselves, then shonky vendors continue to rip people off. If you want to sell something to the public, you should be prepared to stand by your product and your paying customers.

As I understand it (which could be poorly), the phone worked fine until it was upgraded.

I'm not familiar with the Desire. You'd have to go to modaco.com and / xda-developers.com and do some homework.

I do know that you can root and un-root the HTC Desire. I just spoke to my mate about his Desire and he said all he needs to do to un-root his Desire is flash the stock Telstra ROM back onto it. His is a Telecom XT-compatible Desire he got via Mobicity.

So rooting the device isn't a one-way street.

Mine works great out of the box, I absolutely love it but am disappointed not to be able to take advantage of the benefits of the 2.2 upgrade like being able to install apps on the SD card, 720P Video, and the reported boost to performance.

I just wish there was somewhere reputable i could just send my phone for a couple of days to have it updated and returned.

I sent gordon a text today and will have the phone back tommorow. I have a report but will post when I have my phone back in my hands. lets just say, I'll be over a hundy out of pocket for the fix.

You had to pay them to fix the phone they sold you because it wasn't doing something it should have been able to do out of the box. And was probably not doing it because of something they did before shipping it?

I recently hard reset it to factory settings and noticed that the setting were different to when I originally received it, so obviously they do something before they ship it. It was in Chinese for a start. Are we sure these were originally German handsets as previously mentioned?

I initially gave them a good review on Pricespy, I think that review will be revoked, even if my phone isn't.
