Yes, noone in NZ, with a handset purchased from a local retailer and/or rooted/flashed with EU firmware has it yet. New Zealand has not received the update, that simple. Trust me, I'm in the same boat as you, plus not able to mod mine due to warranty issues, plus with disabled 3 button combo, so don't want to mark around with it. :>

Ok. That's great for Nz. Now I don wanna buy this phone anymore. I dont really wanna mess around with those dirty hack anymore. Sick of it. I just want a phone that works out of the box, like my iPhone, jailbreak is just a Mouse click away. And I can restore to original firmware. But with android, it's hard to go back to original firmware once I flash a custom firmware. Damn

you can choose whatever firmware you want, you can stick with what the manufacturer & carrier decide you should have or you can 'hack' to install whatever firmware you want to. Same with all phones. Android also has option to backup your firmware, just like iphone, then you can reinstall the firmware.  With CWM you even have option to back up and restore directly to the sim card, so you don't even need to be connected to a computer (or mac). I think you're a troll!!!Yeah!!!

I don't think he's a troll. I can understand from an end users point of view, it's pretty hard to get the most out of an SGS when compared with an iPhone.

I prefer my SGS but on occasion I do advise friends that an iPhone might be better for them.

Linuxluver:
semigeek: Non rooted SGS owners only. Wasn't it supposed to be released today?

I wasn't rooted, but I did do the Kies (Windows) registry hack to trick Kies into updating my Galaxy S to the JP6 Froyo intended for Europe. It works fine here. I ran it for several weeks un-rooted.

Which hack did you use, I tried this but Kies doesnt seem to give me an upgrade option. The version of Kies is a bit higher than the one mentioned, maybe its that?

Yeah, same here. Especially if I know the person asking isn't technically inclined. I've always said that if you want performance out of the box to go for iPhone. But if you have time and patience, go for SGS. :>

I'm a troll?!?! Lol. I'm more tech savvy than most people here. Lol. Im just not inclined to hack a phone just to make it work better. I don't wanna do that again. I don wanna hack the phone just to install a new firmware. I don't wanna waste time anymore to just to make a phone work. I'm tired of doin that now. I prefer a quieter life. I have messed with my iPhone and many windows mobile phones for hundreds of times (too many hacking involved). I'm sick of it now. When I saw that Vodafone branded sgs doesn't get froyo, so if I buy the phone, I need to hack it just to get the froyo, how will I feel?? I have had too many problems with my hacked iPhone. Hacking a iPhone is purely optional for me, iPhone can upgrade to any new firmware easily without any hack. But, if hacking is REQUIRED to upgrade to froyo and future updates, I wonder whether I will be bothered to do that just to get the latest firmware. Telecom branded sgs might have even fewer chance of getting that froyo from samsung.

Hacking is not required for froyo & future updates, patience is. Froyo doesn't add all that much to the phone, the main thing is flash support, everything else is extremely minor. Samsung is very slow to introduce updates compared with google and HTC. If you need to run the latestest version of the android OS before everyone else you should look at HTC Desire/Nexus One, or the upcoming Nexus phone, or stick to HTC who generally update a lot quicker. Sorry I called you a troll, I saw you had 5 friends and interpretated it as 5 posts.

Last time there was a scrap over an apple it involved a snake, a woman and a couple of loin cloths, but look what happened. So if you must choose an apple again think of the consequences, of course I'm a little biased, just a bit.

On a more serious note, especially for the less tech savvy, you would think that Samsung would do more about the kies issues, the net is flooded with complaints about this software.

For a company that sold 3 million phones in the US alone KIES is a huge let down for them.
Kies dosen't support samsung apps for the Galaxy, even though the menu encourages you to try, it hardly ever connects. It's a joke, surely they could spend 50-100K on developing it or replacing it. With so many SGS's out there KIES is a real thorn in Samsungs side.

I've now downloaded ODIN and I have no idea why I waited so long to do this. You follow the instructions and it works.

Yep the 2.2 update is nice, as stated it's not a huge change but I can now use "chrome to phone" and that is a huge help !

Hacking your registry to make Kies think your phone is from a different region and allow you to upgrade to Froyo is not exactly difficult, nor does it require hacking your phone. I do agree that Kies is a pos and would use Odin or CWM to flash firmware in future.

I look forward to Nexus S, it's a Galaxy S without kies/samsung updates.
