All this talk about the dark mode no longer dark but more dark gray due to the anti-reflective screen. Any insights from current users coming from an S23U?

There are different levels of dark mode settings in the device now.  It can be what you're used to, or less like that and more natural.  But the original experience still exists just fine.

Neat, didn't know - none of the well known YouTube reviewers have mentioned this. The only thing they said was that the black wasn't as black, so I took it as default and something you can't change.

That's because most YouTubers are the lowest common denominator equivalent of a printed flyer in your letterbox.

Wonder if it's worth upgrading to the S24 Ultra from my Huawei P30 Pro, which is nearing it's five year mark but still going strong despite the battery not being as good as before.

I just dropped the daughter's Huawei 30 Pro in a recycle bin at Spark store, after it smashed on the floor, breaking the glass in thousands of pieces. It was the device I was using before the Z Fold4. It served well, and for a long time but it's seriously no competition to the current range anymore.

Speed, camera, 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Android 14 just to start.

I'm looking for a case which will hopefully be as unnoticable as possible, soley to resolve the issue with the camera bump. It's not a protection thing.

Had saved this in my wish list on Ali, not sure if this is what you are looking for, it's individual camera cutouts:

or one with corrugated style:

Nope, I am looking for something that means when the phone is on a hard surface and you touch the screen it doesn't rock on the camera bumps.

Gotcha, then something like the Ringke Onyx

Its a soft TPU case, reasonably thin for a TPU, once installed, phone doesn't rock on the desk, this is part of my collection of cases.

My S24U turned up today along with this case I ordered https://www.samsung.com/nz/mobile-accessories/galaxy-s24-ultra-standing-grip-case-light-blue-ef-gs928clegww/ Seems pretty good so far, it has a nice feel and sits flat.

Yeah I tried that case. I liked it but zero chance I'm spending 80 on a case

I'll wait for China to copy it ROFL

I'm still not a case guy, even though I dropped my S23 last week.  First drop in 10 years, so I'm ok with my average and I get to use my phones caseless.  Most I generally do is get a dbrand skin for the back so it does not get scratched up being on tables all the time, but it adds no bulk.  My muscle memory puts phones in my pockets with the screen facing inwards, and it's never face down on a surface.  It's a risk, but it's worthwhile for me since I want to experience the device, not the device in a cheap shell or with a 2nd piece of glass over it's display.

i understand it not sitting flat on a table because of the lenses will annoy some folks. I always have a microfibre cloth on me for my glasses so I just rest the phone on that on a table for stability when writing.

You are a brave person but I understand your reasoning. How has the glass kept on your S23 and now S24 so far without screen protectors?

I am the same as you. I've had every flagship phone by Samsung, and never had a case. I've only had a screen protector when they were included and they usually only last a month before peeling at the edges which drives me insane so I remove them.

The S23 was the first time the camera bump annoyed me, and this time around I need to do something about it, though it's 'more' stable than the S23.

Displays have generally been fine for me without screen protectors.  The only annoying issues I ever had was OLED burn-in on the S20-S22 devices.  That's not something I can fix with a prophylactic though.  Doesn't seem to be an issue since the S23 though.

I treat my devices pretty well, I don't understand the people at work who go through broken phones all the time.
