I am trying to recover from being stuck at boot after an official KIES update yesterday, at this stage I would be happy to just go back to the official Vodafone firmware, but it seems that isnt an option

I have a rom for the official kies update (reg hack) I think you need kies reg patcher to flash it... never tried it myself. (I saved the rom duing flashing in KRP)

This is the Official VFNZ Froyo Rom (Kies hack). Some may find it useful to revert back to a true stock rom?

If you only got one file it goes in pda. Otherwise code to pda, modem to phone and csc to csc.

Pick a version from the "Europe" section and download it, all the files are there to install via Oden, I recommend the JPX or the JPY versions as these are the most up-to-date and fastest versions available.

From here, it will be like having the normal Vodafone rom, you will be just 2 steps ahead.

Ok thanks for that. I got the csc files and the I9000XXJPY|2.2.1 files but now not sure what to put where in Odin. pit file is obvious but XXJPY extracts to JPY_JPY_JPY and the CSC files throws up a bunch of different files. Any suggestions.

Shove your phone into Download Mode by holding Vol Down + Power + Menu first off.

I usually use another tool to do firmware updates since I am a Linux User, but here's a screenshot of what you do (from my Windows VM):

First off, hit "Re Partition" Note: This will wipe your phone, be sure to backup beforehand, all your files on your SD cards are safe though.

the .pit file is just the .pit file in the archive.
the PDA file is normally marked PDA in the filename of the file.
Phone is normally marked Modem.
CSC is marked CSC in the filename.

Once you have done that, and your phone is detecting (since I am using a VM, it does not detect my phone) hit Start. Your phone will automatically reboot after the process.

It's all pretty simple once you have done it a few times.

Z4Root didn't work for me. After I clicked permanent root it went through a series of checks etc, but then just closed... Any suggestions? I saw somewhere that Z4Root doesn't work on 2.2.

Z4Root does indeed work on 2.2, I am not too sure about 2.2.1, there's another method out there for rooting your phone but at the end of the day it's possibly best to wipe the stock rom and go with something faster like Darkys 6.0 (which is flippin' fast)

If you wish to keep the stock rom, check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108 - load it onto your phone using Oden and that's all that's to it.

I'm on stock 2.2. Downloaded Ryan's OCLF from the market and needed to root my phone in order for it to work. So downloaded APKInstaller, also from the market, then got Z4Root.apk from XDA.

I then put my phone into mass storage mode and dropped Z4Root.apk onto my device. When I ran the installer, turned the USB debugging mode on (as prompted), clicked "permanent root". It goes through checks etc (in the bottom of the blue screen), vibrated few times, but nothing happens. Device isn't rooted, because OCLF still tells me that all those option are only available for rooted devices. I've tried restarting the phone and repeat the procedure, but had no luck.

Ah that's slightly weird, if you can - try doing a software restore, then trying the rooting method again.

If it doesn't work the 2nd time, then just root your phone using the method I linked to above, it's nice and easy + gives you a unlocked recovery image too.

Yes, I couldn't get z4root to work on JP3 either - just use SuperOneClick; it worked perfectly for me.

The only problem with that link you gave above is that I don't have download or recovery mode enabled. Still working on it. Trying to get my head around Heimdall to get 3 button combo (recovery/download) fixed.

I can go into download through ADB method, but not keen on using Odin without recovery, just in case.

I will uninstall everything I've done and try again.

Thanks, all worked fine, but I think the phone may have a hard fault. It gets further through the boot sequence now, up to the second Galaxy screen but it stops there, waits for ages vibrates (as it did before) vibrates again and shuts down. Will try Odin again using the JP3 firmware

Ah good point, the safest method of doing this is the one explained at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785201 - Follow that and you will get Download Mode working.

You can also do this with Heimdall, but I wouldn't recommend it since Heimdall is still a beta app, and things could go wrong. I have had no issues with Heimdall but am just thinking "Just in case"

Ah yes, I had this problem. The trick was to use the JPU firmware (JPX should work too), make sure "Re-Partition" is ticked as this wipes any corrupt lagfixes that have been applied in the past.

From here, install CF-Root using Oden from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108 - This will give you the full Clockwork Recovery image.

If things boot from here, then you are set, either download DOC's rom, or the latest Darky 6.0 rom, and install that via CWM.

Remember: It's not bricked if you can still get to Download Mode, it's only a soft fault, soooo:

Cool, I will keep this in mind. However, Richthofen's method is not safe. If you read that thread (which I did! all those pages... :() every page has at least one brick.

I found this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821698, and there are no bricks reported so far. That thread pointed me to the Heimdall, as it mentions the fact that if Windows recognises my phone drivers fine (they give you step by step guide to determine this), then using Heimdall to enable bootloaders is bulletproof.

I'm not completely useless with technology, but Heimdall has been a little challenging for me (you need to install the drivers before doing anything), so I'm doing more reading and research on it before taking a plunge. :>
