But in the reality, you will not experience a brick no matter what method you use. Just remember, you are at risk of bricking your phone every time you flash anything to it. If the phone runs out of battery or fails during the bootloader or modem flash then that's it, it's a paperweight. And all Roms include these too. Unless if you are VERY lucky with being able to get it back into Download Mode.

I will tell you what, since I have a JIG cable - if you brick your phone I will recover it for you, doesn't take me long :P

The majority of rom releases actually come without the bootloaders. So if something does go wrong you'll have a semi brick at worst. However since he is specifically flashing the bootloaders here if something were to go wrong he'd most likely have to send it back to samsung, the jig most likely wouldnt work. I'd definitely go for heimdall over odin, odin is known to fail sometimes and has done so for me. Heimdall has been solid for me so far though.

As long as you read the instuctions though you shouldn't have any issues.
The readme that comes with heimdall will tell you all you need to know for the setup.

This is what it would look like (open the .tar file for boot.bin and sbl.bin) for flashing.

You can ignore the adbdownload as you already have it.

Ah yes, you do have a point there - flashing official Rom releases mostly include a Modem / Bootloader though, but flashing custom baked roms only include the Kernal and a Modem file if you are lucky.

The only official rom I've come across to include bootloaders is JPU. The firmwares that are most used like JM8/9 or the newer froyo builds come bootloader free. They all include a modem but theres no harm if that fails during the flash. They are easily recoverable.

I've gone through plenty of different modems on the same rom.

If there's no boot.bin or sbl.bin inside the code file theres no bootloaders.

When flashing with Odin I could only get the phone to work using JPU with the 3 separate files, plus pit file and re partition enabled. when I had the same settings above but using a single file in the PDA box in Odin such as JPY I would always get errors on the phone and it would hang. So after a successful 3 file load I then tried JPY single PDA file with the pit file but with re partition disabled and it all went just fine.

Its probably mentioned somewhere but I haven't read anything about turning re partition off. Anyone else found this?

It's my understanding with the all encompassing file you don't need a pit file at all. I didn't last night when going to JPM. I'm not sure it's been mentioned :)

Oddly the Widget Locker widgets are still messed up on Doc's rom too.  I ended up with one of them having an overlapping widget of the same type.  It was the one (can't remember the name) that has the date, time etc.  And one was stuck at 6:25 and the other has the accurate time.

My battery drained 63% overnight after 6 hours [yawn].  However I realised I hadn't set my Autokiller to strict and this may have made the difference.  I'll see after tonight.

The browser is a bit screwy too, but it's been mentioned as being a bit screwy.  I've downloaded the alternative one and probably just flash that instead.

I am such a d*ck! When I first read the instructions I couldn't piece it together (until you gave me that screen shot). I had a look at the front-end of Heimdall and saw that I need two files - primary and secondary bootloaders. There is only one .tar file in instructions, right. So I asked on XDA where are the boot.bin (primary) and sbl.bin (secondary) files and the fact that from instructions it is unclear what I need to do with the .tar file. In return I got "read more/do more research". All they had to tell me that both bootloaders are inside the .tar file.

I'm not completely stupid (I promise! :P) and have tried the Odin method before which had only one .tar file which had to be put into PDA field. Hence my confusion with the .tar file in Heimdall.

Now that I know this, it should be piece of cake. Thank you so much for pointing it out to me wazz. :>

BTW, sorry about me not getting back to you re stereo connection. I have no way of testing it at this stage, as those pricks from Harvey Norman still haven't got my replacement micro SD card in. I will put some music on my internal storage and try to connect and will report back to you.

You only need a .pit file if you are wanting to re-partition your phone.

I now have 3 button recovery enabled with a Heimdall method. Took me less than two minutes. :>

heh, thanks Neets. All I needed is a little guidance. Heimdall was very easy to use and I will be using it from now to flash roms too. Odin didn't even require driver installation, which I think adds to it's instability. So happy right now!

Now to get hold of the person who ordered by new micro sd card two weeks ago and never got back to me.
