Theclaytons: Sounds encouraging. Any idea when we can expect 1.2.7?

I'm not involved with the development at all - just snooping around in GitHub. There have been a few merges in the past few days. If you sign in you may be able to get a CI build APK - not something I've tried.

The WiFi calling itself is quite good. I've had it going the whole day. There's a seamless handover between VoLTE and VoWiFi. Last time I tried it was prior to the VoLTE rollout (different phone) and the call would drop. I'd expect lower battery use from the more efficient WiFi radio too, so I'm keen to use it in preference to cell where possible

Reception at my place is a bit spotty in a couple of rooms - one of them is my office. Wifi and cell reception are both weak in my garage so I forced a call drop there. The phone wouldn't let me place another call for a couple of minutes after the drop. No issues otherwise. Skinny seems a bit more robust jumping between two weak networks (couldn't force a call drop), but there's every chance the cell sites used are different.

Wow thanks for finding a way to make WiFi calling work on 2Degrees Matt.

I'll see if I can grab myself a 2Degrees prepay sim and check it out over the next week or so

Also great to hear the possibility of PixelIMS 1.2.7 having the ability to allow this from the phone on all WiFi networks.

Ideally... 2Degrees would make this work as Spark and One do, but this work around might be enough to get me back to 2Degrees and able to bundle all of our Families plans back together again.

Thanks again!

Looks like 2D has VOWIFI with Pixel 8.

I'm using the latest beta version and I now have working VOLTE and VOWIFI with Pixel 8 on 2degrees.

My Pixel8 works fine, but it's nothing special. If I was buying now I'd get a Samsung S23 / S24 because it's fully supported locally, including things like voice over wifi, faster CPU, and Samsung is bringing in AI features that should rival Google at some point.

There's a great comparison here for those making the s23/P8 choice:

https://www.pocket-lint.com/pixel-8-vs-samsung-galaxy-s23/

I prefer the larger screen size of the Pixel 8. I'd buy it instantly from a local carrier. As it is I've blown my tech budget for a few months and my current Pixel is adequate. Now I'm waiting for a super deal or maybe the Pixel 8a.

@timmmay where do you see Google Tensor going vs generic CPUs? Anything special? It seems like everyone is using cloud services for AI with the only exception being photography.

I hear in a generation or two they might catch up, plus have dedicated hardware for specific purposes. Everyone seems to be putting AI into their phones, which I don't find particularly useful.

My wife's S22 works very well. On a fast charger it doesn't heat up as much as the Pixel. It's a bit faster, even though it's older. It has a telephoto lens, and doesn't have a huge lens bump. Google has some nice software behind their camera, and slightly enhanced voice recognition.

Pixel 8 Pro is, Pixel 8 probably eventually. Google's done people who want a smaller phone a disservice this generation.

matt1553:

Make epdg.epc.mnc024.mcc530.pub.3gppnetwork.org resolve to 118.149.14.20 (the 2degrees ePDG / VoWiFi IPSec gateway) on your network. Then use the IMS patcher to enable WiFi calling.

Based on code merges for the IMS patcher, the next release (1.2.7) should allow setting the following (for use on any WiFi network) instead of custom DNS:
iwlan.epdg_static_address_string = 118.149.14.20
iwlan.epdg_static_address_roaming_string = 118.149.14.20

Does anybody know what it would be for one.nz (former vodafone) and mightymobile, which should be the same, right? I want to give it a try, as my pixel 6 does show volte, but does not show vowifi provisioned (before on one.nz and from today on mightymobile).

Been wanting to grab a pixel for a while and have come across this. Seems like a pretty awesome deal.

Any reason why I shouldn't?
