missed my edit, managed to fix it by restarting phone - i guess it does a trawl through the sd card upon start or something? weird, but fixed!

My phone got a bit rooted last night, no I didn't [intentionally] root it!

WARNING: A task killer (Advanced Task Killer) is responsible for this (that pesky little green droid in the top left above), and now I can't use my Desire at all (untill I do a factory reset, or root it).

Sense is totally corupted, all i see is the above, no matter how many times I 'force close'.

I haven't tried a button factory reset yet, but that should work. If not I may be forced to root the phone. Will that void my warrenty?

A warning to others: Now I know why a lot of people say 'Dont use task killers' - they can really f#$k things up!

So, how many of you are using task killers, and do we need them? I killed all tasks late last night cause the phone seemed a bit slow. there were so many tasks that i didn't bother to be selective, just killed the lot, and look what's happened :(

Hopefully the factory reset and restore from backup will mean this is just a small annoyance.

I can't seem to locate any official announcment Google made about Android 2.2 during the Google I/O keynote this morning - has anyone found or heard anything?

If Apps2SD is imminent I think I will be very tempted to root the phone as I've heard it could be months before we see an official HTC upgrade for the Desire.

I don't think you need a Task Killer on 2.1, I've not used one and haven't noticed ill effects from lacking one, but I do see quite a few problems associated with their use.

Factory reset should sort that for you, a bit of a pain of course.

I believe you can 'unroot' a phone, or at least flash it back to generic firmware, so theres no way for them to determine it was Rooted when they consider it for warranty purposes...

I also suspect that an official HTC 2.1 upgrade will be some time off, I'll definitely Root the phone once a 2.2 ROM is available.

is there any way to boost in-call volume?

it's ok in a quiet room, but out in the city ..shessh .. way to low, speaker is an option, but not a good one.

must be some voulme tweek/hack out there somewhere..

with my old htc phone it was just a case of hitting the volume rocker when in the call - it defaulted to controlling the volume of that rather than anything else which was nice

Further to my post yesterday, I'd just like to warn you all that the built in HTC Backup to SD card is pretty useless. It hardly backs up anything, just a few settings, but not even APN settings, so had to put all that stuff back in. Contacts aren't backed up, but this wasn't an issue since I'm using Google Apps anyway - all my contacts are in the cloud. All apps had to be re-installed, so I'm wondering exactly what this does back up!?

Re: in call volume, Quick Settings (available for free in Market) has an option to set that, but when in a call i would assume the side volume buttons do that anyway.

I've been using a app called Task Manager v2.0.8 on a HTC Legend for a few weeks and regularly kill all running apps, which I probably don't need to. I've started using it more for checking what apps start up by themselves or which apps are opened by running some other app. I also use it to kill off some games to get Act 1 video player to resume a movie. I haven't had any issues to date with this app.

Well if I've opened the game Zenonia then hit the home button then open Act 1 video player and select to resume a movie it fails. It's not until I use task manger to kill Zenonia that I can resume the movie in Act 1, well that's my experience, so they're kind of useful in that regard.

Settings > Accounts & Sync, then tap on the Google account, and ensure 'sync contacts' is ticked

Yeah, lol been there done that. Still won't sync up. Seems to be a common issue from a search, but no solutions yet.

Is this via inbuilt Google Sync, or using Exchange? Whichever it is, try the other (HTCs Exchange sync is better than the inbuilt one anyways).
