kiwibj: Recently added to the 2 Degrees web site re. HTC One M8 4G connection.

* The HTC One (M8) is 4G capable via a simple software upgrade once this has been approved. We expect this to be released in early August 2014¿.

I bit the bullet and ordered an M8 for $655 from justwow.co.nz and it has turned up about a week later and I'm pretty pleased with it. It's an ex-HongKong version I think, but a bit of hackery to get it S-OFF and an "open" European firmware applied and all is now 100% English by default - it mostly was already but I'm picky.

I also got the dot-view case, the actual case is good but the dot-view part of it is a pretty useless gimmick.

Insanekiwi: As I have a 2 year warranty - I will continue to observe the lens and decide what I will do with it in the future. If there is minimal change - then it should not be a problem. Cheers.

Going by comments in other forums, HTC seem to have unofficially acknowledged an issue with the coating on the camera lens(es) and seem to be fixing affected models pretty much no-questions-asked. Seems to be some discrepancy as to whether it's a (relatively useless) UV coating, or oleophobic anti-fingerprint coating, or something else.

Is this because it requires the LCD screen to be on full time for it to work? Thereby killing the battery? I could see that it would work better with amoled screens for this reason. I'm always a little suspicious of covers that introduce a magnet close to the flux sensor of a handset as I use the compass quite a lot.

You need to double-tap the screen while it's closed to bring it up, in any sort of well-lit area it's very hard to read as the dots are holes with a thin rubber wall behind them which block a lot of the light.

The magnet seems to have no effect on the compass that I can see. Also, the GPS in the M8 is fantastic. Accurate to within 9m while I'm sitting in my lounge and in GPS-only mode (no WiFi). Such an improvement.

Hi folks,

Just a heads-up - 4.4.3 was network approved by Vodafone NZ for the M8 as of the 7th.

INEVITABLE EDIT: Network approval does not mean the update is live to download, rather that it has been tested and approved by Vodafone for release at the manufacturer's schedule. When it rolls out is up to HTC, I just post these up when they hit my desk as I know you folks like to know when updates are not far off. :)

If it is a combo ROM for optus/spark/Vodafone/2degrees (like my M7) will it have to wait until all providers have approved it before anybody gets it?

Glad to hear, a step in the right direction, looking forward to it.

Care to speculate what's in the changelog for the 4.4.3 update?

Thanks Dingbatt. Looking at the list, it doesn't look like it includes HTC's own file manager as some are reporting the update to include in Asia maybe apart from security fixes and 4.4.3 update, some of the items are different depending on region?

Just received 4.4.3 update notification on my 2Degrees M8 running on Vodafone, have just finished downloading the file, installing update now :-)

Well done 2Degrees, pushed the update out much faster than I expected.

Well done 2Degrees, pushed the update out much faster than I expected.

2degrees didn't push it, HTC did. The carriers just have to test it with their networks and advise HTC that all works as expected.

Also installed it on my Telecom supplied M8 on Optus.

4.4.3 update for Spark was out yesterday as well. Been on this since last afternoon - subtle improvements. Too early to say whether battery life is better/worse but there is additional reporting at least!

Edit: If you havent received the update notifications. Go to settings -> about -> software updates to prompt a check. Best to do this over wifi, and also ensure the runtime is set to Davlik (in case you've switched it to ART).

I notice a report of a small bug fix OTA update for the M8 to address GPS issues. Is it likely that this will change the firmware of the phone or just the software? I'm trying to get it straight in my head as to whether every update should be applied even if you are on a custom ROM just so the phone is running optimally.
