Kelem: Ease of use for me is the biggest thing i know GB pretty good and really can't be bothered with a learning curve atm.

Still 50/50 with the IOS idea, got the kid a ipad coming home from AUS, must say i like it alot.

To Be honsest ICS is pretty much just the same as GB with like 1 or 2 things different/new.

Never said you did.

If you root using zergrush, you can install a CF-root or Siyah kernel using Mobile Odin to get CWM. Once you have CWM you can flash any ROM of your choice. You don't risk touching your Flash counter at all if you follow this method.

Samsung provided the download mode and odin as the official system for flashing custom roms on the sgs 2. It is therefore the only officially supported method.

I chose to go with odin because it has a very long history of success, is very well documented and understood. The problems and limitations are very well understood.

It is not a good idea to present newbies with several options each of which uses conflicting procedures and unfamiliar possible complications. Most newbies want the tried and proven.

I'll tell you what: you write up a clear, fool proof FAQ on how to use zerg rush, including pictures and credits and urls, and I'll put it in the FAQ below with credit to you. Google doc format would be ideal.

I always used to recommend people unfamiliar or uncertain about flashing to flash litening roms using Odin ()well documented install process). That gave a nearly foolproof way to root and flash a custom rom, which then also gave you CWM recovery to try new things. There was no screwing around with different methods and also got you used to using Odin which has a well proven track record (like you mention). Now my phone has been rooted for so long (nearly 11 months) that I no longer have any idea what methods are out there!

Was really enjoying Omega v8 & v9 until I started getting hit by regular force closes of android.process.media (also known as Download Manager).

It would sometimes force close quickly after a small time the phone doesn't respond to a command, but other times chew most of a CPU for some minutes before crashing. I've tried killing the process but it is back straight away.

I've also had the phone become unresponsive when the screen was off: it just won't wake and I'm forced to hold the power button for a while to get it off. This may be the same problem.

It's not so bad that I'm bailing out just yet, but I am glad I've got a nice backup of 2.3.

Yup I am almost done with ICS, I don't see anything I use that I prefer from GB, plus my battery life is abysmal on 3 wipe roms I've tried with a 2000mah battery, I am barely lasting 13 hours before a charge is needed with 28 minutes screen time and 1H30m phone time (seems like that is higher than expected).

Trying to isolate mild battery drain ... Handset sms i think is a culprit ... Anyone know s of super light sms app that pops up? I don't need fancy . Just need it to pop up

Got my new 2000mAh extended battery this week and have managed to get 12 hours life each day, with about 20% remaining. I'm running stock ICS 4.0.3.

Am using streaming music over 3G for about an hour each day, but fairly light phone usage during the day (couple of calls/dozen sms messages/little web browsing).

Guess I'm getting 2 - 3 hours extra usage versus 1650mAh battery. Well worth the investment, especially at the price.

Also got my 2000ma/hr battery this week and have been impressed no end. Got my phone on release from Clove so the existing battery is almost a year old and probably not as good as new by now.

I can now get 2x days of moderate use on the new battery rather than 1 as before. Far better than expected.

If your s2 does NOT have cwm installed yet, you will HAVE to use odin as per my faq.
1. Download and copy the ROM zip file to your sdcard, make sure it's not corrupt (open in with winzip on the pc first).
2. Download the newest version of siyah kernel - Odin version. Download Odin 1.85 as well. All on XDA. Put them onto your PC.
3. Make sure you have the drivers for the s2 installed on your pc (kies, see the faq).
4. Put your s2 into download mode (faq), Start Odin on the pc, THEN plug your s2 into the pc. Wait for any drivers to install.
5. Put the siyah kernel tar file into the PDA section of odin. Untick re-boot. Don't tick or change anything else - see faq.
6. Click the start button. DO NOT play with your computer or have any other apps going. If it interrupts the data transfer to the s2, you're (potentially) f-ed.
7. It'll say pass, and you unplug the cable. Take the battery out. Wait a minute. Put it back in, and boot into recovery mode (see faq). You then use CWM to wipe your device, then flash your rom zip file off the sdcard.
8. ????

10. Winning!
11. Reboot into your new rom.

Mobile odin requires your s2 to be rooted already. So it's only useful AFTER your use PC odin to flash siyah (etc).

Does flashing siyah via ODIN not increase the flash counter? Haven't been able to find a solid answer on xda/google.

I should explain that I'm reasonably familiar with flashing roms via recovery from the G1/ADP1 days, I'm more or less just trying to figure out which is the best/safest way on the SGS2, seeing as there appear to be multiple methods available.

Yes, it increases the counter. But the counter can be wiped.

more sweet spot :

Omega 9 Siyah 3.1rc1
- omega has fixed the speeddial and now it works
- after disabling bloatware i can get to <1% per hour battery drain on deep sleep
- can't tell on screen time but it really depends on your screen brightness and the clockspeeds

so now it's even better than my 2.3.5 dlev 3.1 which i have now deleted forever! (mind you i could get 2% per hour drain with push gmail, outlook activesync, facebook, which i can't have with ICS because of too much battery drain for some reason)
