I tried earlier and got a network error. I tried again, got the same message. But I was able to synch with AppBrain and use the Internet on my phone so I'm not sure what it's about. I'm using mobile data at the mo, so thought perhaps there was a connectivity problem.

I have tried with 3G and wifi with the same message. App brain can send you to the market and you can use the menu button to get to my apps and search etc It just seems to be the home page is not working?
How strange

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

Hey all,

Can you please give me a quick heads up on rooting, ROM-ing etc?

Basically I'm on stock VF 2.2
PDA: I9000SRJP3
PHONE: I9000SRJP2
CSC: I9000VNZJP3

At this stage I'd like to lagfix (touchdown slowness is driving me mad!) and better battery life. Not sure if I want a custom ROM (since I don't know much about their advantages vs. stock).

Can I unroot later (in case of a warranty claim mainly)?

I have the 3-button recovery. I had a look at this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596 but not sure which lagfix to go for.

What I'm looking for is something along the lines of

1) Root with...
2) Backup with ....
3) Apply ...
4) Enjoy :)

You need to spend at least 3 days reading everything about rooting, roms, and problems there of here, and on these links:

The genreal proceedure is this:

Make sure the 3 button recovery (3br) works on your phone.

Install Clockworkmod (CWM).

Use CWM to flash the custom rom of your choice.

At various stages you may need to use a program called ODIN; do a LOT of reading (many hours), then come back here and ask some specific questions.

Watch out if your are installing any ROM's?kernels with the newest clockworkmod (ver 3.x) in them. This version of clockworkmod will not install any ROM's that you could install with the OLD version.

In other words, any backup roms you had on your SD card and any you made with doc's rom kitchen (as of today anyway).

So, you can find yourself backed into a corner. We all have to wait until the rom chefs update their stuff to cater to the new cwm.

You may find yourself having to use odin and re-flash back to older versions.

So check to make sure you know what CWM version is being used.

Sorry if YOU know this already; a lot of newbies out there.

Ok I just had the best battery life so far with my phone so thought I'd share.

I'm now at 15% battery with the following stats:

Time spent without sleeping 7h:17m
Screen on 4h50m
Wifi Running 3h8m

I had 3g disabled most of the day while at work as the reception at work drops down to Edge speeds and chugs battery like there is no tomorrow.

The most astounding thing for me is the screen time, usually I'm lucky to get over 2.5hrs. I also used my phone for over an hours music while in the car and using the gps for Endomondo tracking a 20 minute walk. Most of the screen time was reading ebooks using Aldiko.

All comments are my own opinion, and not that of my employer unless explicitly stated.

I didn't change anything I don't know why my battery is suddenly lasting longer. I've actually been using the same Rom Doc's XXJPY 6.2 for several weeks and have only flashed a few new hardcore speedmod Kernels.

Nice work lokhor. Seems like your battery troubles are now gone! :>

I'm using the latest Speedmod kernel (L) on Doc's rom and it's fricken fast! 1% in battery overnight too, so can't complain. :>

Yeah I always prefer Speedmod as he always adds new features in (voodoo sound most recently) and has the best speed, image quality and battery life.

Has anyone else tried the JL2 modem? Seems to be getting a good write-up?

I see over on XDA that poor Cypher_X's laptop died (knack'd hard drive) while he was flashing with Odin, and has hard-bricked his phone. . . . .Eeeesh!
