id love to contribute, could someone link me a quick 'how to extract from cache.rfs' guide so i can learn how?
This should work if someone wants to post it on xda, seems like a lot of crap in there for a csc though.

Quite nice wallpapers, but I'm not sure why they're referenced in the .xml files. ?Interesting to see there's a couple of security certs in there too??

fahrenheit: Well I finally installed Angry Birds the other day (& I'm already addicted) and I'm experiencing wall to wall NZ specific AdMob ads with wifi or 3G enabled.
Anyone on a non-NZ CSC getting ads for other regions? If the CSC affects these, then I'd like a CSC from a poor communist country that hates capitalism.

Must be a boy thing. I installed it. Had a bit of a giggle at my lack of ability (didn't do well with Play Station either) and then got frustrated when I couldn't get past a level.
I uninstalled it. Not because I suck, but didn't have time to play (and get good at it) and flashing the phone is a fulltime addiction, don't have time for another Tongue out.
lofreq: hi all, this is mainly for the benefit of telecom sgs i9000T users who are trying to catch up to all the vodafone action: i was in your boat until about november last yr. there really seemed to be no support for 850mhz devices but as it turns out the resolution is reasonably simple once you begin to understand how it all comes together.
basically the PDA build of the firmware is universal, the phone/modem is the one that controls the radio and frequencies, and the CSC has all the regional build info.
i was running stock eclair 2.1, and upgraded to froyo 2.2 by applying the registry hack, and spoofing TNZ region, which allowed Kies to update my phone to DOJP2.
this was fine until late December, when i noticed Kies stating another update was available. i didnt read the versions carefully enough, and i flashed the phone again which put me into JJ1 or JL1 or something, which was a backwards step into Eclair again.
at this point i gave up with Kies and started trying to find out how to update the phone directly using Odin etc. I found this post by systemtech http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=97&topicid=74830 which detailed his efforts in upgrading the phone. he identified a specfic modem build that works in brazil? that seemed to be very fast and also compatible with 850mhz.
i downloaded the full XXJPY from samfirmware.com, and Odin 1.3. put the phone into download mode, and flashed JPY across... done in 5 mins and no issues at all. i then added just the JPA modem and reflashed the modem across, this worked fine as well. testing the phone saw me running full 2.2.1 with everything working, calls, txt, hsdpa data, wifi, etc.
i then decided to try Darky's rom as prompted by systemtech, this was the brand new v8.0 rom that was released about 4th Jan 2011. clockworkmod recovery was already on my handset as i found out, so all i did was copy Darky's rom into my internal SD memory, and run it from clockworkmod. instantly i had darky's rom working, but it had a weird modem build included. i just reflashed the JPA modem back on, and presto - full darky build, 2.2.1 (dubbed 2.3.1 by him, just a naming thing its not really gingerbread - yet) phone runs lightning fast, and after turning off "wifi always on" the phone lasts easily 48hrs with normal use, and about 30hours with moderate use, with all the added features like upgraded mail app, hacked camera, 5 icon touchwiz launcher, all sorts.
phone is like a brand new person now and there are updates flooding in constantly. so to all telecom users, theres no drama with getting your hardware up to date, just get a good speedy modem to flash on and all should be fine.

And doesn't change anything in the rest of the android os, and if I change rom it will completely be replaced? Right? I've still got a lot of reading to do before going on to any of this as you can tell :P

Not exactly - there's essentially 4 parts to what you see on the phone, and there are dependencies between them (to some extent):
Kernel: This is the heart of the Android O/S, and is the layer that sits between the hardware (CPU, screen, RAM etc) and the applications. It's responsible for managing resources so that apps always have enough to run correctly. This is why optimizing it the way Devs like Supercurio & Harcore do is so crucial to the speed of custom ROMs.
Base ROM (aka PDA): This is the Galaxy S-flavoured Android O/S effectively containing all the Galaxy S drivers, but unlike closed-system devs like Microsoft, it's compiled from Source Code that has been 'released' by Samsung. Because Doc gets the source code, he can do as he likes with it, so removes extraneous bits n pieces, optimizes it carefully, and adds other things like BLN notification etc before compiling it.
Modem (aka Phone): This is the piece of software that actually makes your phone a phone, so it controls voice functionality, as well as sms, mms, wi-fi, 3G, GPS etc.
CSC (Country Specific Code): This is a tiny bit of code that sets your APN settings to those of your local carrier, and also influences which apps you can see in the Market. There is some debate over whether it's actually necessary - not having an NZ CSC certainly doesn't seem to cause anyone any issues here in NZ.
Hope that helps - I was confused as hell when I started out, but you'll get the hang of it. You'll probably stuff a few things up along the way, but there's plenty of help to be found here!!
