So... It seems that the update on the 2degrees version still doesn't enable 4G on Telecom, but it does stop that 4g toggle app from working, thus blocking the one way we did have to get 4G. Classy.

That seems very odd. What's the CSC revision on the 2degrees model post-update? You can check this by dialing *#1234#.

Vodafone NZ model was N9005VNZBMI1, and is now NN9005VNZDMJ4. The Viaero 4G toggle app does not open the usual configuration page, so presumably the dialer code it triggers has been disabled for some reason. I don't have a Telecom SIM around to test, can anyone confirm Telecom 4G is not enabled on this CSC either?

oh man that sucks......
have you tried reinstalling it? maybe there is a different app on the playstore that will work?
i don't want to update my note 3 till theres a working app that will let me use 4G.
if you find something, please share it with us.

Who is it that is making things difficult for us?..... 2degrees? telecom? samsung?
They are doing a pretty good job at making me miserable.

oh a side note, who has camera problems with their note 3?
about 10-20% chance i get "camera failed" messages when using the camera, and i have to reset the phone.
its a joke that the software is so buggy... they might as well remove the camera if it cant be used so often.
after using IOS for 6 years, i can see there is a massive difference in stability and reliability between IOS and android.

I haven’t had any software issues at all to be honest, with the exception of this 4g stuff which seems intentional, not like a bug.

I'm so angry, i wonder if i can go straight to Samsung and tell them to swap my Note3 for one that works on Telecom 4G.
i don't know what makes things so hard for them to "tick" the setting to says "OK!! Telecom 4G"

Seems to be memory leaks too. After 4 days I start to have apps closing all the time switching away from them and soon after while using them. Clear memory doesn't achieve anything. Reboot and it's back to heaps free for a few more days.

Your camera issues don't sound typical. I wouldn't rush generalise your experience with Android generally, my Note 3 is rock solid (although I haven't got the latest update as yet).

Why would 2 degrees turn off the LTE in the phones that it’s on selling to retail shops? I can understand if they were phones that were in their shop, that would be used exclusively by 2 degrees customers. But they have modified the ROM on all the phones they have touched.

Sure we can still use the phones fine, but the main feature I was upgrading for is the one feature that the phone can’t access (without the 4G toggle app).

Telecom said the ROM can be updated by an ‘over the air update’ which they will do but haven’t got a date for us. The same or similar over the air update has been deployed overseas. The actual update used is available on the internet but it’s risky to try it yourself.

So I called Samsung NZ. After all we paid that extra to get it through them. The lady on the phone blatantly said no over-the-air update will ever fix it, it will never ever work on Telecom, you have to change to 2 degrees or Vodafone!

That’s funny because my friend found an app called 4G Toggle and you can use it to turn on 4G? Downloaded it and it works! Never going to work aye Samsung? The only problem is that when the phone is restarted it will be back to turned off again and you have to run the app to change it back. It’s a slight hassle but I don’t restart my phone that often, and its not really a solution but a work around. But it demonstrates that the phone is compatible with Telecom’s LTE.

I also called Telecom and he suggested I go see 2 degrees and pay them $30 to undo their little firmware downgrades they enforced on their phone. But I think I can make do with the 4G toggle app at least until I’m certain that the over the air update has been and not fixed the problem. If the over the air update happens and does fix it then that would be great!

So as it is I can use 4G on my 2 degrees phone with a Telecom SIM indefinitely with this 4G toggle app.

But now I hear with excellent timing comes an update that disables the 4G toggle app? Well I guess that update can wait till Telecom has exhausted all efforts to make an over the air update.

First disabling 4G in the phones, now when we find a (free) way around that, an update comes out disabling it? Common what's the big deal. Can't we just use LTE and all be friends?

4G is not disabled in the device. It is enabled/disabled on a per operator basis in the CSC file. If you put a Vodafone SIM in the 2degrees device, 4G should work just fine.

Why the latest update doesn't include Telecom's new operator profile in the new CSC, I'm not sure. It's particularly unfortunate that the previous workaround is no longer an option. This is not something Vodafone (Or, presumably, 2degrees) has requested. Will see if I can get more information on this when I'm back at work next week.

we are just in this odd switchover point in time when voda has 4G network running, telecom are JUST getting theirs up, and 2degrees has not. at the snapshot in time when the phones were built and had the CSC's loaded on them, thats the scenario that was true. weeks later when the phones have been sitting in their boxes for ages and 4G landscape has changed, the phones arent up to date with the play, yet. carrier updates and whatnot move at a glacial pace so its no wonder CSCs arent being updated properly and whatnot. its just bad timing that will be solved in time.

i dont see how blaming 2degrees or telecom or voda independantly solves anything, or samsung even. its just the fact that this is a period of transition and some people have unfortunately bought devices from one box and are now trying to use it on another carrier. however, calling to speak to these companies and getting nonsensical idiotic suggestions from them, is disheartening to hear.

its annoying and frustrating for sure but the device isnt at fault is it.

i have not experienced any camera issues, or memory leaks on my note. the biggest problem ive had has been with my worse and worse performing Swype keyboard, which is a known problem with their latest version - it has become laggy, buggy, and slow. have actually now switched back to the stock samsung keyboard with continuos input option, and the speed is phenomenal in comparison. quite upset as i paid for this app but the problem is worldwide so nothiing i can do. again, not the fault of the phone just the buggy software i have chosen to use.

This arrived for me this week, finally got around to testing it tonight and can confirm it works well, which is a great result for the $11USD it cost me from Ebay (including shipping). Considering it basically does everything the Samsung Smart Dock does, I'm well pleased.

Few notes:

Yes, it is MHL 1.0 - I kind of expect them to revise these to MHL 2.0 before Samsung actually get around to releasing an updated dock.

USB OTG functions will not work without a 2A Samsung charger connected apparently, I was initially using a cheap charger that happened to be in the multi-board the TV was plugged into and was disappointed when nothing would work. Got of my lazy @$$ and grabbed my Samsung charger and all working. Plugged in my externally powered USB hub and then a Logitech K400 keyboard/mouse combo, card reader with a 16GB full-sized SD card in it and also a Logitech F710 controller. Happily watched some video from the card and then played some Dead Trigger 2 on the HDTV with the controller.

I find the camera on the Note 3 to be pretty rubbish unless you're taking photos of a static object, in bright light, and you can hold the phone VERY steady. My expectations may be unrealistically high versus my "proper" camera, but most pictures come out as if I have a bad case of the DT's (I don't).

I have not however had any stability issues. Are you using a MicroSD card as the save point or the internal memory?

i found a dramatic difference after ensuring "Smart Stabilisation" was enabled all the time. its effectively replaced 'night mode' but also seem to improve image output across the board. have u enabled yours? i found that the spot metering for autofocus was also very sensitive and usually didnt find focus correctly if set to center weighted only. even hitting the shutter button seemed problematic, i swear im touching the button dead on but it takes several goes to finally snap off a frame.

definitely find that the speed to focus and FOV to be a step back compared to my previous phone (Galaxy S3). it feels like the stock camera software lets down the hardware.

have not tried any third party cameras yet. anyone have suggestions?

If it is a 2degrees Note 3 you will have to ask 2degrees why the handset does not show the LTE selection with a Telecom 4G SIM. Generally the CSR's will not know and will have to inquire with their internal device team or 2degrees will need info from the actual OEM.
I know the 2deg Nexus 5 works out of the box with our 4G SIM.

While we may speculate whether a future update will enable it we cannot be certain as this is only something 2degrees can answer.
