Ditto on my P8. And this just after a factory reset
indapie2000: Cheers everyone, phew glad it's not me
I guess it's a compatibility issue with Android 14 (even though the Play Store listing says it is compatible)
Loads fine on my Pixel 6a with android 14 so seems it's an issue specific to Pixel 8
Well looks like I have a defective camera in my P8. I didn't notice when I got first since about the only pictures I take are of food :-) But on a recent overseas trip when I used the still and video camera part I noticed a focussing problem. if the Macro mode is set to automatic, then if I aimed the camera at a close object it would focus. But as soon as I pointed at a distant object the camera would remain in macro mode, with the yellow icon still showing, and the subject not in focus. I would have to tap the icon and then wait for a few seconds until the camera focussed and the I could feel a slight vibration as the camera focused. And I would lose the image opportunity.
On videos I would be taking a video of subject and then something would move in front of me (taking a picture of a street and then a car moves in front of you) and the camera could not focus on the new object and it's out focus. Or it would just randomly go out of focus.
Google suggested a factory reset which I didn't do of course when on vacation but did so when back home and the problem persists.
Google then offered a warranty return either shipping me a new phone immediately with a credit card hold until they got my one back, or I send the phone back and upon receipt they ship me a new one. Of course neither of these options is helpful to me because I can't ship a phone back to them because of batteries in it (though I note Fedex will ship a phone), and Google will not ship a phone overseas.
I have found if I turn off Macro mode the problem is not as bad but if I aim the camera at a close object, the Macro icon will come on (in black suggesting I should turn it on) and then if I quickly switch to a distance object it will refocus but with a noticeable judder on the phone as the lens refocuses and then sometimes the camera will just close itself.
I can probably live with this until I have a friend/rel/myself goes to the US again in the next 10 months and do the warranty replacement then. But annoying.

Just to show an example of this focus issue. Train is in focus when it first appears and then goes out of focus so the camera is not able to focus properly.
At about 14s the image goes out of focus and then at about 21s it goes into focus again and I have not moved the phone t all during that time.
If I can't wait and Google accepts sending the replacement phone to any US address (not the one where the original phone was shipped to in CA), I might see if there is a friendly GZ'ers going to ther US willing to take my phone over and ship to Google (they normally send a prepaid Fedex label) and I will arrange to have the replacement shipped to the address the GZ'er is staying at. I am sure I can come up with a small consideration for that favour :-)
So what are we thinking about NZ. Is it because of the number of Aussies that come here for holidays and Google wanted to make sure their phones still work on holiday?
Here are some secret codes to enter on a Pixel phone to get to specific menus

I tried the service one since my camera is broken but it didn't tell me that since I could take pictures - just sometimes they are not in focus.
I have a Pixel 4a and had planned to move to the 8a until I read a rumor that said the size will be bigger than the 8. So I thought why not just go for the 8 as the size was my priority. Just before heading to Australia for a short break I made the decision to get it. Looked locally but no stock in store at Parallel Import (had better price than Mighty Ape) so picked one up in Aus at JB HiFi. Even better was that they were unexpectedly on sale with the 256GB AU$100 less than what I have planned to pay for the 128GB so grabbed it.
So far it is excellent. Cost less than here, fast, great screen, size is better than I thought and photos are great. Even friends I was with mentioned the photos.
Issues, well the fingerprint reader is not perfect. It is more than ok and not annoying so will be fine. One app, Microsoft Authenticator is not working so will need to sort that. Yesterday Android Auto was dropping out in the car, other days including today it was ok.
Thanks for the case suggestion, picked up the Spigen Liquid Air and I like it.
One question, Ultra HDR is on by default for photos. Should this be left on? I worry the photos will be overly bright but suppose if they look good to me then leave it on.

March 2024 feature update on both Pixel 8 and Pixel 7 today, no VoWiFi for Vodafone/One, but it is there for 2Degrees. Swapped sims and same result on both P7 and P8
