A metal backplate may interfere with either the phone aerial or the wifi aerial.

Shame to here about your crappy experience with the camera, I was hoping the camera would be better as this is important to me. Maybe I will have to wait for another smart phone to come out before I upgrade. I really wish that the new nokia smartphone was android rather than symbian, because it sounds like the camera on that will be extremely good.

Apparently it's resolving a lot of the lag issues, but, it's only Beta, be a few more days till the official release by Samsung. At least they are trying though!

Yes, I am running it along with a lot of people at modaco but it is still laggy I am afraid.
I am now using
jg5 + hack of moving apps to ext4 partition on class 6 sdcard + using autokiller on aggressive settings.

Seems to be making it snappier.. but jg5 by itself isn't enough.
autokiller seems to be making a big difference.

Yeah I wondered that about a metal case too, one way to find out I guess.

Yes the camera was disappointing especially as most reviews I read said the camera was pretty decent although they were a bit worried about the small sensor. Now after my wife pointed out the blurry issues, I have googled that and found some reviews commenting on blurry photos being produced etc.

Who knows, maybe the lag of the phone is also interferring with the camera etc, anything is possible.
It has a mountain of settings and I found an antishake one which was off by default but didn't seem to make much difference for me, I will keep playing though, I'll let you know if things improve in that area but yeah I wouldn't currently recommend this phone if the camera is quite important for you given my experience and my wifes.

Thanks for the replies on the Desire v Galaxy front.

Games aren't a big issue for me - don't really play them. However I do use the phone as a business device. And need excellent email/calender integration etc. PLus I use my Tomtom GPS in my current iPhone all the time, so a turn by turn navigation app is a must.

What is the verdict on these two devices in these respects.

I've read several times that the iphone has a more accurate/faster gps locator, but can't remember if that was iphone vs desire or iphone vs galaxy.

google turn by turn voice navigation will be free and hopefully will eventually be available in NZ. I think it may already be available with a hack.

The navigation works well, I am using the modified version and have tested it, works nicely driving around.
It is just an app that you can install , you can download it from this thread.

It just sits alongside the the official maps but of course they have been hacked to allow navigation in any country.
Just copy it to your sd card and install with a file manager like linda etc.

That is a shocking review really,.

Kind of misses some rather important things like.. CPU/GPU (for gaming and watching hd content etc), can you see the screen outside during the day? does the multitouch work properly? does the phone lag?

I think you need to find some more in depth reviews, they have just really glanced over the surface, I wouldn't base a decision on that.

Well I'm sure it could be faster, but for me it has resolved all of the "black screen/has it crashed?" style pauses that were a big a problem for me in the previous version.

don't put too much merit in led flashes, they are quite bad, led is good for movie lighting, but for photos you need xenon flash.

Well then count the desire out if you want it for gps navigation, you tried using a gps you cant see? :P
Those amoled screens are shocking with any reflection and if you are thinking of mounting it on windscreen or using it outside in your hand - ouch..., that is the main reason i sold my nexus after only owning it for 2 weeks, that and the issue of it not having decent multitouch.
Either go LCD or s-amoled if you want to use it outside..

I've used the galaxy to drive around with and its fine, my issue is when using it in the hand and walking around with it its a bit funny...

obviously the rest of your criteria are all software based basically so the same over any android phone, they will just look a lot nicer on the bigger and brighter screen of the galaxy.

Lag is definitely under control for me now so im a bit happier.. even managed to take some decent shots with the camera so im suspecting the lag might have been causing the camera problems too...

I really hope your opinion of the camera improves, because I want a phone with a semi-decent camera. PS. most reviewers said the camera is reasonably good.
