If you flash a new base rom then you really should (must) do a full wipe and a factory reset.

2. Try to get Root and copy your /efs directory to your PC/USB stick/bank vault in Monaco

I found z4 root was good for this step, it has a non-permanent option so is pretty risk free.

I never permamently rooted my phone as a seperate item; I simply installed the 3 button recovery (my phone did NOT have it; it is apparently a known fault in samsung and they distribute a fix for it internally so smasung NZ is lying to avoid warranty claims imho).
And then installed ROM's with root pre-installed.

Never been much interested in stock roms aside from as a base for new custom roms, and as a fall back option in case of problems or warranty claims.

In my experience - and I have been flashing custom roms to PDA phones since the HTC APACHE, a custom rom is almost ALWAYS better than a stock rom. It seems that manufactorers pay as little attention to software as they can, and I think this is a major strategic blunder.

Apple (whom I dislike due to their lock-in mentality - had enough of that north korean attitude from microsoft) never the less has shown how important polished, robust system software can be. (pity is doesn't multitask properly, but still...). Itunes is a plot by aliens to rot and destroy our minds prior to invasion of course...

Anyway, I installed 3br, used 2e recovery to load CWM, then flashed a rom (zip, Darkys). Immediatly I had a phone that was going 2 or 3 times the speed.

lokhor: How much does a second hand SGS sell for these days? I'd really like to get a device that has better support and isn't made by Samsung.

Sorry, better support is largly a myth imho. I have seen more updates from samsung than i ever did from HTC.

I dont regret moving from an HTC Desire to the SGS - it's turned out very well and I don't regret it (tempting fate there aren't i!).
In the end my hand was forced - had a warranty issue with the desire and didn't want to be without a phone... Will be selling the desire when it's back from htc next week.

Anyway, a second hand SGS is worth $50. I can pay you now!

lol joking Cool

Whats your definition of a full wipe, 2e recovery then wipe ? I might do this if it is that important

Edit: Tried z4root thinking I may be able to get my efs file out but it became unresponsive during the root even after leaving it for a while. Did a batt pull, maybe not the best but it booted up again fine

I am running VFNZ stock 2.2 firmware build Froyo.SRJP3. Double checked that recovery (have 3e) and download works. I have been thinking of creating a custom rom from the rom kitchen. What I am not too sure of is how to get 2e recovery. Is it better to flash say the kernels by chainfire of Speedmod by hardcore. The other thing thats not very clear is do I need to have 23 recovery before trying to installing Clockwork Recovery ROM Manager.
I know a its a lot of reading but what would be useful if a a sticky of a guide to installing custom rom was made.
Thanks

That's the exact scenario I was in a few weeks back -  I'd suggest you do what I did, and use Odin to flash the Voodoo kernel, which has a customized 2e recovery mode inbuilt.

Just remember that the Voodoo kernel does the lagfix ext4 conversion automatically on first boot, so if you then want to flash a Darky/Doc ROM from an update.zip, you need to disable the lagfix first (which is done from 2e recovery).

He's porting the Nexus S rom correct? I wasn't sure if that was still happening. I'd love an AOSP rom.

Which method did you end up using to get root access?

Root Explorer - it's a paid app, but I'd consider it pretty much an essential tool, along with Titanium, and ROM Manager .

wow, I go away for few days and Doc releases few more versions of his base ROM! :O

Anyway, I see they added the CSC section in the kitchen, but no NZ in the list. Are you guys using the generic XEU instead of VNZ CSC? I didn't think CSC matters much anyway, but would be good to know that we can have a region specific firmware. :>
