So finally managed to flash my first ROM. Very fast I must say. Way quicker than stock-ROM +lag-fix.

However can't seem to root it using Z4root, which just crashes, kinda like what Shrapnel was experiencing.

Shrapnel: So I finally got my phone rooted...

How did you manage to root yours?

Did you flash a custom rom or one of the official (leaked) ones?

Umm it was the CriskeloMOD-XXJPY ROM so I would say it's a slightly tweaked version of the official one?

Go into cwm and choose install root from there.

Aha there we go. Had to boot into the CWM Recovery and got it from there. Cheers :)

Yeah, it's got a new UI which is so much nicer. The guys have done a lot of work there and it's a very user friendly site.

Others on the original XDA thread as still requesting a "template" rom for those new to flashing their phones who don't know what combination is a good start. Still it varies so much depending on where you're situated as modems seems to make a bid difference to call/connectivity quality.

I really want to try out XWJS3 with the JL2 Modem to see how the battery life/performance are. need to find time to flash it.

is JS3 really majorly better than JPY? i thought it was just the Euro version of 2.2.1, from the comments i read??

does it list anywhere the improvements it holds over JPY?

Thats what I figured too, doubt theres any notable difference between the two.

Just cooked a XWJS3 9.1 Doc ROM and installed it.
Went for JPY modem.
Looking good!

Was making a nandroid backup and things turned to custard. So ended up with a wiped phone. I'm going to stick away from these if I can help it.

Had Titanium Backup so have just finished restoring everything. Phone is still nice and fast running criskelomod.

Just got 1776 Quadrant score which is pretty good.

Don't get too caught up on Quadrant scores; I was getting ~1680 on the stock Vodafone Eclair with Voodoo lagfix. . ..Am now getting just over 1200 with Doc's ROM as per my sig, and the phone has never been faster.

Even though Nofam said its not a big deal that's a a way better score than mine, what is the proper procedure for wiping a phone anyway?

And I used Galaxy S One Click Root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=742403, but after that I had problems with apps force closing. I reflashed after that and realised that my phone was rooted even after the flash so I assume the rom is pre rooted (criskelosmod xxjpy) If you can confirm that defraggger?
