lokhor: I am trying JL2 modem and got 50% signal loss bug. What modem are you guys using?

I'm on 2 Degrees

I've found that while JL2 works fine in Christchurch
The phone gets no signal off net (ie, Vodafone) in rural areas.
JPU gave full signal, while JL2 had 0 bars in the rural areas.
I'm sticking to JPU for now.

Just been doing some tests on battery life, and I've discovered that the Android wireless sleep policy doesn't actually shut the wifi off:

Request timed out.

This is sitting 3 metres from the router, which gives a 1ms ping time during normal use.

Yes I think it was. I think I will just try a new ROM first and see where that leads me.

Got ~20% battery drain overnight on the JPA modem. That's with wifi auto disabled. Not good at all.

No, it doesn't sound great. My battery drain is with wifi enabled all night (presumably it was connected all night - 3G doesn't show any mobile data usage and I had twitter and email arrive)

Had around ~12% battery drain overnight, after doing the battery stat reset. A bit better but not good enough. So yep definitely time to flash something new.

Most of the newer roms have a wifi sleep bug that you can fix by flashing a different wifi modem. search for update-wifi-dxjpa.zip on xda

ventolin: has anyone successfully updated their I9000T via the Kies hack? I just tried but just sends me back to the 2.1.1 update rather than Froyo :(

yes, puts you back to eclair. forget kies, use odin. i posted up a pretty verbose "guide" a few pages back for updating the i9000T

After some use, I have come to the conclusion, I don't like the Galaxy S, in fact, Ithink it's rubbish...

Let me detail my experiences....
If you find I am wrong on a point or don't know the answer, please correct me....

Hardware:
- Once device got so hot while charging, the OS disabled charging!
Phone book:
- Keeps crashing when I attempt to exit by going back back back
Web browser:
- Many unwanted blank windows keep opening in the background, cannot control ability of windows to open in background
- Does not always open my home page
- Will not close unless task manager is used to force it to close
- Cut and paste is horrible on this thing, cant select a sentence of words, impossible to copy within the email app so using the Google translation app almost a complete waste of time
- Difficult to select the smallest things like to maximise a video window....need stylus
- Not having basic controls always available is a pita, such as favorites, forward, back etc etc
- On-screen keyboard takes up to much screen and makes it difficult to see what you are typing or to read other stuff at the same time such as an email your responding too
Video player:
- Does not play really common codecs, and codec packs are not avail, forced to use alternative apps to watch video
- Stutters/lag at times
- Forced to use video app to watch video on net, rather than natively within browser
Firmware:
- The 2.1 to 2.2 update removed the two best live wallpapers with moving water
- The 2.1 to 2.2 update removed the ability to use voice-to-txt in the messaging app
- So many system crashes....error messages....
- The OS lags

And I have not modded it at all!
Installed next to nothing.

I am really dissapointed with this mobile....my old Nokia N900 was a hundred times better than this

I am now on the look for a replacement....
The Galaxy S2 has really nice specs but it may suffer from the same issues....
Maybe my long term choice, the Nokia N9

Thoughts?

And that right there is the fundamental problem with your experience.

This phone as a stock 2.1 or 2.2 device is exactly as you describe. A disappointment. But 2.2.1 and the modifications that have come from it have radically altered the experience.

Sadly, NZ hasn't been on the receiving end of the more recent official updates, so as it stands, owning this phone and depending on Samsung will only lead to disappointment.

I think thats your problem. Everyone in this thread knows how terrible a stock SGS. That's why there is such a huge modding community behind the phone. You just gotta get into it and then you too will believe :)

Agreed, without custom roms the phone is close to rubbish. My original experience wasn't thhhaat bad but I'm picky so I felt it was necessary to flash a new rom

This would mean losing Touchwiz yes? (which is pretty crap anyway...I cant stand iPhone lookalikes, which is all Touchwiz is)

What are some good mods you guys recommend?
What custom ROMs/firmware do ya recommend as fully functional and safe with addirional benifets?
What websites do ya recommend to read up on modding etc?

To add to the comments above, my thoughts are that while Android is fantastic, and the Galaxy S hardware is top-notch, it's Samsung's implementation of one onto the other that is appalling.

So when you take Samsung (largely) out of the equation by using a custom ROM, you're getting somewhere near maximizing the potential of both parts.

To be honest, using the official Froyo with a lagfix was acceptable to me. By flashing the Voodoo kernel, you didn't need root access, and if you had a backup of the JP3 ROM, you could revert back to factory at any time.

Probably the best compromise for those that don't want to dabble too much.

No, the 2.2.1 ROM is available, but let the guys at XDA do the heavy lifting for you - Doc Rambone's ROM's are the best-in-class in my opinion. Check out his kitchen here

Just remember to have appropriate backups of your apps (Titanium Backup), and your /efs folder - you'll need root access to get either, which voids your warranty.

Is JPA the modem of choice for XT users? I was getting some very sub par GPS performance last night with it, and whenever I drive somewhere I lose about 10% battery per 30 minutes of driving.

Has anyone played with the other 850/2100 modems like JK3 and JK4?

i just gave darky's v9.0.2 a flash, and chucked the JL2 modem over the top. sitting INSIDE my apartment with the JPA modem i managed 4 satellites with minimal signal strength. switching to JL2 modem i instantly got 8 satellites in view, 7 locked, with much higher signal strength. pretty impressive. i will test it out for battery life over the next few days and let you XT users know how it goes :)
